5G on Netgear 815S ?

I was thinking about replacing our 815S since we're still having trouble losing internet connection. I'm not sure if it's the 815S or the AT&T tower service, and don't know any way to determine this other than replacing the unit. I replaced the SIM card twice and it seemed to help, but still having some problems.

Looking at ads for the 815S they say 4G LTE. In the settings in my 815S there is an option for 2.4 Ghz, 5 Ghz, or both. Does that mean it will work with 5G service?

I don't know anything about that unit but I've seen some WiFi manufacturers refer to 5 GHz WiFi as 5G. That has absolutely nothing to do with the new cellular services called 5G.

tetranz is correct. The 2.4ghz and 5ghz refers to the WiFi speed, not the cellular connection.

The 2.4 GHz band and 5 GHz band refers to the frequency bands that your WiFi router transmits/receives it's WiFi signal.

It has nothing to do with the 5G (5th Generation) broadband cellular internet system.

To the OP's question, 4G and 5G are completely different services and it's almost certain that a 5G device will be backward compatible with a 4G LTE service; not the other way around.

With all due respect....2.4ghz and 5ghz are radio frequencies with differing reception characteristics and wavelengths, kinda like HF vs. VHF.

5G is a newer, different connectivity format that has higher data transmission speed.

Thanks guys! That clears up my confusion! I'm thinking I would be wise to buy a hotspot that's 5G compatible, but I don't want to lose my Connected Car Unlimited Data Plan from AT&T. What 5G Wi-Fi hotspots would be compatible?

Hi Joe,

I don't profess to be a tech expert, by any stretch of the imagination. However, from what I've been reading, you may be a little premature in your pursuit of 5G. As I understand, the frequencies that the 5G signal is transmitted don't penetrate obstructions very well, making them better for very short ranges from the transmitting tower. It looks like a much faster data transmission of primary benefit in dense population areas where there are many, many cell towers in a relatively small area. Generally not where most of us hang out in our RV's.

If that's not a good description, I'm sure somebody will be along to give a better description.

Even though the 5G is just "on the horizon" I was thinking that if I can find a 5G hotspot that's compatible with my Connected Car plan then it might be wise to go ahead and prepare for it.

As I understand it 5G refers to the fact that the future 5G system will rely on many more smaller cellular access points as opposed to the fewer but larger cell towers we have today. I don't think the speed we experience as end users will be much different.

The only ones I know about is the Unite 815S that you already have and the older 770S.

We bought the Nighthawk to replace the 770S. It's great.

As you have been told 5G Cellular and 5ghz Wifi are two totally different things.

There are a couple of 5G Cellular broadband devices out, but most of them were introduced before actual 5G cellular was rolled out. So, most are more like 5G Ready. They'll need to undergo an update in the future to unlock actual 5G service. Mostly, it's new phones with 5g capabilities that have been rolling out in the past month or so.

Also - don't listen to Verizon's "5G Nationwide" and think it's everywhere. It's in separate select locations and those locations are spread out across the county. Verizon has high-speed 5G in parts of 51 cities, along with mmWave towers in 24 stadiums and arenas plus six airports.

T-Mobile actually has the most active 5G cellular service in the US right now. They have it because Sprint had invested in it and when they merged T-Moblie shot to the head of the bunch on 5G. T-Mobile's 5G network is 28,000 times larger than Verizon's.

There is a new 5G Nighthawk Pro broadband router out now and it is state of the art with ALL cellular frequencies and a super fast cellular modem. It's $510 and would presumably work with your Mobely SIM.

From what you guys have said I don't see any reason to worry about getting 5G compatible gear right now. I'm still having problems with my 815S cutting off several times a day and would really like to find a replacement that would be compatible with the AT&T Connected Car Unlimited Data Plan.

Still looking for answers.........

If you Google "AT&T disconnects" or do some reading on the Mobile Internet Resource Center website, you will discover that there are lots of people complaining about random AT&T disconnects. I have them on my Netgear Nighthawk with an AT&T SIM from OTR Mobile.

What makes these disconnects so maddening to most people is that the connection doesn't go away; all that happens is that you no longer have an internet access to most sites, but you may actually have it to a few of them.

Because of this my router doesn't even disconnect my Nighthawk; my load balanced configuration simply stops getting data from this connection.

The only reliable way to see the outage is on my Android phone which almost immediately lets me know that the "WiFi has no internet access."

The good news is that a quick reboot of the Nighthawk restores the connection.
