Dash Cams

Anybody using dash cams? Which ones are good and how do you have them mounted- at top of windshield or on dash?

We use a dash cam that looks very much like this one New 2 5" Full HD 1080p Car DVR Vehicle Camera Video Recorder Dash Cam 270° IR | eBay . Ours is mounted with the included suction cup on the windshield inches above the dashboard.

At a price of $14 you have to agree that it's affordable. OK - you will not be able to read license plates of the vehicles in front of you, but for accident purposes it is more than adequate.

Personally I think it is not worth spending $160-170 on a dedicated dash cam, and chances are that they will not be able to pick up license plates either.

If I was going to spend close to $200 I would opt for a Gopro Hero 3 camera which takes excellent video's and can be used also for recreational purposes. The Hero 3 has a loop function that will allow you to use it like a dashcam - i.e. if keeps recording and when there is no more room on your SD card it overwrites the oldest file. The Go pro 3 can be bought for under $200 on Ebay and for $200 at Best Buy GoPro HD Hero3: White Edition Action Camera White CHDHE-302 - Best Buy

This is of course "horses for courses" but as a dashcam I am satisfied with the cheap option that I use now, and I have used it for a couple of years now. It does exactly what i need it to do.

Just my 2 cent.

After looking at the video's of the advertisers I wish I had one on our last Alaska trip. Often Moose, bear, Caribou and other wildlife were on the road in front of us but by the time our cameras were found and turned on the animals had walked off the road. I'm thinking of adding one now. Kind of wondering if anyone has had that type of camera experiences.

As I replied to another thread, I went with the G1W and saved $100 compared to what, Windshield Witness, my wife and I found to be a very much overpriced dashcam.

I have the Dash-Cam brand no problems, Mounted under rear-view mirror next to my GPS. I never have looked at the recordings, I will check it out next time I use it. When not in the MH I have both in the windshield of my daily driver.
Happy New Year,
Tim
