Direct TV Going Away ??

According to this article AT&T is planning to change Direct TV into a streaming only format doing away with receivers and antenna. Everything would come over the internet to those customers with AT&T data service.

Not shocked. Streaming is the future...for now. Unless data becomes cheaper, this isn't going to be a good deal for sat customers.

Don't see any upside for the Sat user..More cost for sure.

The way the article reads it would seem that AT&T customers would be able to access Direct TV NOW with no data charge against their cap. All other internet providers would charge for the data used to access Direct TV NOW. This is a way to force customers to drop other wireless plans and subscribe to AT&T. Since your current receiver and antenna would be obsolete, if you can't access AT&T's network you would not be able to access Direct TV NOW without huge data charges.

Some things never change. For at least 50 years, the customer has never been ATT's focus. Even after you drop them, the "deals" that they offer are temporary.

Leased phones, no SOB answering machines, refusal to port numbers are a few items that come to mind.

This article is pure speculation. AT&T has not said that they are going to do away with satellite dishes. Even if they did, you can't think about the delivery of streaming television services in the context of today's wireless networks. In 5 years, it is going to be a whole new world with 5 gigahertz, LTE unlicensed and additional capabilities being tested by the likes of Google and others for very high capacity high frequency applications. You can't think about these advancements in terms of today's technology.

And I thought you were going to discuss the name change that has been bandied about. Apparently DirecTV is going to be renamed to something AT&T. So, whether or not they continue delivery via satellite or internet will be of little consequence.

If it was AT&Ts plan to become a big player in streaming services they could do it without paying a fortune for Directv. There will be a need for satellite service for remote homes that don't have high speed internet service long into the future.

Interesting article ... nothing happening before 2020 so no need to get excited. Personally, I don't care. I prefer a good book.

I still have several months left on my direct tv contract so they can't change anything until my contract expires! I'm pretty sure I have them tied up.

I'm not a lawyer but I did watch Perry Mason a few times.

DirecTV Satellite is not going away despite the sensational headlines and all the postings on the RV forums. The articles say they plan on streaming to become their primary focus for delivery of their broadcasting packages, NOT THE ONLY delivery. There are thousands of square miles in this country where that system does not and will not work. In addition, the changes in technology have to be in place and fully functional for this to work. The satellites will still be in orbit and sending data packets to our receivers for many years to come. So don't toss your dishes and receivers just yet. Chuck
