Directv dropping SD in 2019
It is my understanding that Directv will discontinue Standard Definition signal
April 2019. This means my in-motion satellite will be obsolete.
Will force me to replace the satellite unit and move to Dish Network, I still want the in-motion capability.
Anyone else making the move, and what is the best Dome and equipment recommended?

There is another thread with some really good answers in it. Maybe ask your question there?

here is what you should review - depending on your equipment - everything could still work after april

I understand that DTV will move the SD signals to the 101 sat where the HD signals live and perhaps convert them to HD.
I am assuming that my SD In Motion Dome will become HD capable for DTV when that happens.
Certainly will wait to see.
I just read an opinion that DTV will evolve to streaming their programming in a few years to avoid the investment and maintenance of Satellite based signal transmission.
Perhaps all our antennae will be useless some day.

Over the weekend, the CEO of AT&T told shareholders and investors that "we have launched our last satellite!" This is interpreted to mean that AT&T assumes that by the end of life of the current DirecTV satellites (including those currently in standby orbits) it will be able to convert all 20 million DirecTV subscribers to streaming via DirecTV Now.
If the 5G system is built out as planned and AT&T provides data incentives to use DirecTV Now (like not counting data against your data budget), then it ought to be possible to do this. OTOH, not everything goes as planned!

You might find this interesting:
https://entertainment.slashdot.org/s...e-tv-in-the-us
Given that Space-X has gotten permission to do a load of low earth satellites for internet things might get pretty interesting.

We had DTV for 20 years and then switched to Dish when we went full-time 2+ years ago. Zero regrets.

If one has always had std def, then changes receivers and also goes to a 3 lnb (spell) dish, would one need to contact Direct to have HD activated or does it just happen thru the equipment?......was try'n to find that from them, but their site is down...

I know that with my in-motion done, the power for the dome comes from the KVH receiver.
That receiver will need to be replaced for Hi-def signals. I own that receiver and DirecTV is not going to supply a replacement, since its already obsolete thru KVH. The whole KVH, M1 system will be junk.
With my King Quest dome, I should only need a newer receiver, then the SD one I have.
I'll wait until April on that.

I wouldn't worry too much about AT&T not launching anymore satellites. In fact, they just launched two new satellites dedicated to Mexico and 4K for the U.S. Expected life of the new satellites is at least 15 years. I can see not launching anymore for 15 years....who knows what will be available by then with all of the new Tech updates. I suspect the entire U.S. will be covered by 5G low earth orbit satellites.
