I just replaced my KVH TracVision SF sat dome with the KVH R4SL. The reason I upgraded is that with the SF dome, I was only able to view one bird at a time. With the R4SL, the dome will toggle between two birds. In my case, the 110 & 119 satellites.

The KVH dealer did a fine job of installing the dome and everything worked perfectly at his shop when he walked me through the operation of the new dome. However, one day later at home, the dome will not work properly. It will lock onto one bird but will not toggle between the two. After going over several troubleshooting steps with the installer, he told me that I will have to replace my receiver, which is a PVR805. He said the only receiver that is “certified” to work correctly with my dome is the 311, a non-PVR receiver.

I tried calling KVH to confirm this, but gave up after being on hold for more than 15 minutes at a non-toll free number. The documentation that came with the dome supports the installers recommendation of the 311.

I am beside myself. I love PVR’s and had I known that I would have to go back to a standard receiver, I would not have forked out the huge amount of $$ it cost me to upgrade.

Has anyone had any success with any other Dish PVR receiver with the KVH R4SL dome?

Craig

I have a Kingdome satellite dome. I had the same issues as you did but was able to get the VIP722 to work somewhat. I was told the same thing that it would only work with the 311 receiver. Like you I won't watch TV without the DVR.

So I did get the VIP722 DVR to work but it only work on one (Primary) receiver. The second dishnetwork receiver (all dual models) work on a different frequency and as such won't work as you discovered. In order to get it to work, I put the DVR in single mode and force recording via receiver one. This prevents does prevent you from watching one program while recording an other or recording two programs at once but it is better than the alternative which is no DVR. Mine does toggle between 3 satellites (110, 119 & 61.5).

Thanks for the reply, Harry. The DVR that I have in the RV is an older non-HD single tuner receiver. I have a VIP622 & VIP612 in the house. Maybe I should try one of those in the RV and see if they work better.

If your using a dvr on Direct or dish they will not work properly because the satellite is found by a signal put out by the reciever and direct and dish only give kvh a couple of receivers to use and they were not dvr's. dish network just came out with a seperate dvr to work with the vip211 reciever on dish and you can use a dvr as a second receiver but not as a finding satellite reviever.

Dome style receiver for new and old satellites

Dish network dp311 non-hd vip211 hd

Direct tv
D12 digital Rca drd420
h21-200 hd

Old rca drd 420 receivers w/low speed data port

Kvh mobile CSN

Disappointed W/ KVH upgrade

Has anyone upgraded from a KVH "SF" to a R4SL and use the exisiting base of the SF? I ubderstood that this could be done which would save time on removing the old base and replacing it.
