Exactly right. Unless the power is cut off to the receiver it won't need to go through the set up again. You must be shutting off the power to it somehow. Ours has never done that unless it was unplugged or 110v power shut off.

Only time I have to use set up, is if I'm in a place where one of the three satellites is not available.

Last summer is when we experienced this, and I called DISH about it. Apparently, the box needed several updates. Said this could happen especially for the occasional/part time use that we give the Tailgater. I went through three separate update sequences with their tech support on the phone (full reboots, which took a while). We didn't notice the box shutting off after that. I'm hopeful that fixed the condition.

Wish the weather was warmer so I could again test this out, but will have to wait for Spring (which hopefully for us folks in the Northeast will come extra early this year!!).

Thanks for all the helpful replies!

If you carefully read the owner's manual,, It tells you they do that and why.. Now as it happens, I think they could have designed better.

I have a VIP-211k and am not currently using it.. I will keep it around for when I need it.. But I also have a DTV-PAL by Echostar (Dish's parent) it does the same thing.

now I can make it not shut down.. BUT it will still "reset" from time to time, I'll be watching a show (recorded overnight) and suddenly it will switch to "Loading Program Guide".. Cause that's why it shuts down.

On my 612 that controls when the receiver will check for updates and reboot itself. It doesn't power off and stay off. I have four of them and at my last house I could hear them all reboot at the same time.

Wandering off topic a bit. I was looking to change the inactivity timeout on my home living room receiver and couldn't find it. I got into the manual and it says it's under "preferences" which is where I had looked. I went back and it's not there. I have a 722 in the motorhome and can adjust the inactivity timeout, but the setting doesn't exist on my 612 for some reason.
