DISH 211k shuts itself off after several hours...

I have the DISH Tailgater w/the 211k receiver and love it!

One question though --

When I'm parked on shore power, whenever we're not actually watching the TV for several hours (like going to bed at night - I just shut off the physical TV set and not the DISH receiver), the receiver ends up shutting completely off. No lights on the box at all. So, we then have to go through the whole setup process again when we turn it back on.

I did find a menu setting to "never idle" the box (or something to that effect - I'm not in the rig right now). We tried altering several settings there, including when the box should receive updates, but the box always shuts completely off (again, overnight).

If we leave it on all day, it seems to be fine.

Anyone else experience this? Trying to figure out if this is normal, or if I may have a bad box...

Thanks!

My 211 shuts off overnight, but I just hit the power button on the remote and it starts up fine, without going through setup. Are you using the power button on the remote or on the box itself? Holding the power button on the box will initiate the setup sequence.

I programmed the Dish remote so it talks to the TV as well. The small power button on the remote powers the TV and the large power button controls the box.

YES!!! I just recently got my 211k and have only used it on a couple of trips. But I noticed the same thing. If you're actually watching TV when it decides it's time to shut down it does send a warning message. Something about the receiver will shut down and you need to hit some key to stop it. Don't recall exactly as my GF was the one that answered the message. Of course that does you no good if you're sleeping!

I haven't had time to research how to prevent it from doing this yet. I'm also hoping there is some setting to prevent it. I agree it's a PITA to have to redo the connection with my automatic sat dome every day because of this. I don't have to rerun a check switch but do have to re-establish the tracking with the dome by rerunning the satellite lock procedure on the dome. Hopefully someone has the answer. I may call Dish and ask them at the same time I try to find out which satellite(s) carry Speed TV in HD.

This might help.
For a 211k,
> Menue
> Preferences {8}
> Updates {4}, select times

The 211k will message it is going to shut down after a couple three hours of inactivity. A key press will continue operation. If it does shut down upon restart it should not require to run through the setup again. My Hopper at home does similar.

As for unexpected shutdown without notice and having to go through the setup upon restart, have had this happen a couple times. I was working another topic with Dish tech support this occurred. The tech went away to research it and returned commenting a known issue that was being worked. This was a couple months ago.

Like Bruce said above - The receiver does NOT COMPLETELY SHUT OFF by itself and you do not have to repeat set-up.

If you have the HDMI cable connected you will see a warning (not seen over the RF Coax Cable) that says:
"Your receiver is currently off. Press Select to turn on."

DO NOT PRESS THE POWER KEY ON THE RECEIVER. This will cause a restart.
Just press the Power or Select key on the remote to activate it.

Safe travels

Thanks, everyone, for all the replies!

Maybe it truly is a software bug:

This only happens overnight for us. We have to start over each morning from scratch to have everything re-set up and start watching TV.

I did not hit the power button on the receiver (used the remote). (Good to know though that doing that directly on the receiver causes a restart!)

I have adjusted the time the box receives updates and tried several different times to see if that would make a difference (it didn't). I would think that updating the box would not make it do a complete shut-off.

We leave it on all day for our cat and it does not shut off. (The cat watches HGTV in case anyone was wondering!)

I think I'll attempt to call DISH to see what's up and/or if there is a bug fix in the works.

If you follow FreshAir's instructions that should take care of it. I have had mine setup that way for years with no problems.

In the setup of the 211k there is an option that turns unit off after what ever hours of idle use is selected, you can also set to disable this feature

The receiver needs to go into standby mode on occasion in order to download program guide information. By default the unit waits until 3 hours with no activity, or you can set it to do it at a specific time (i.e. the middle of the night.) When it wants to go into standby it will display a message and the user can cancel and continue watching with no ill effect because the unit maintains program data for a few days, but eventually it will need some time in standby mode.

As others have mentioned when in standby mode the unit is not off, and will not require any resetting or re-initialization when it is moved back into operating mode (using the button on the remote.) If the unit is turning completely off it is most likely due to some user error, like using the main power switch on the receiver which will trigger a reboot of the unit. Use the power switch on the remote only.

The other less likely cause is a hardware problem, such as the unit overheating (the 211k likes to run hot.) It's best not to operate the unit in a small, enclosed space, especially with other powered hardware that is also generating heat.

I didn't read all the comments, but, if your recover gets too hot, it will shot off. Happened to me. Make sure you have ventilation. I had to add a 4" computer fan that stays on all the time and makes very little noise.

it might be over heat so system shuts off automatically. Mine was very hot when being used. i have always suspected it will shut off after extended usage.

When we are done watching TV we JUST turn off the TV...NOT the 211K receiver.

Next time we turn on the TV a promt screen will be there saying to push SELECT on your DISH remote to continue service...no need to go through the setup again.

Are you sure there is not an inverter or something removing input power to the 211k? This is the only time when my 211k want to go back through setup. And I just cancel the setup and it works.
