DISH & DVR's

I cut the Direct TV cord on this current trip after spending hours on the phone with some foreigner trying to change the local address with no success. I went to Camping World and bought a Dish Playmaker, Wolly & external DVR. So far DISH has been very easy to deal with. The DVR isn't exactly what I had hoped for. Is there a better DVR that will work with the Wolly.

The hard drive will record fine from the Wally. The thing to keep in mind with your Playmaker dome antenna, you are limited to one tuner and one satellite at a time. You can not watch one channel and record another. The only way to activate a Wally's second tuner is to have it on a triple LNB antenna like the Trav'ler or RF Mogul. If you add an OTA tuner to the Wally, you will be able to watch an OTA channel while recording a satellite channel or vice versa.

. . . or a triple LNB portable dish which can be problematic to aim, especially if you're coming from a DirecTV environment.

A rooftop Winegard Travler or RF Mogul automatic dish will set you back at least $1400 (not installed). And if you're spending this much money, then it's more practical to get DISH's Hopper 3 which is a 16-tuner, whole-house DVR.

The one issue I have with the DISH DVR is that you cannot access your recorded DVR content if you power up the Wally in a place where you cannot access a satellite. Since being able to watch recorded shows when access is blocked is precisely why I bought the DVR, it is frustrating. (This issue also prevents you from using the integrated OTA function)

The only workaround I have heard of is to keep the Wally powered up in transit (genset or inverter since its 115 VAC). If you do this, it retains the guide data it needs to allow access to the DVR function. PITA!

Thanks for that nugget
New info for me

But, you would need to know in advance that your next stop is an area where you canít access satellites. Right?

Correct - or get in the habit of running with it powered up just in case.
