Whenever the Hopper is on, or any DVR for that matter, data is being written to the drive. Even if you're not recording anything. That's why you can be 20 minutes into a program and decide to record it and still get the whole thing.
That is true. Didn't realize the hopper was working continuously. Good point.

Thanks

Without being quite so esoteric....

They advertise all the time how many channels a Hopper can record...

I really don't care so much, not all that into my TV...

How many can you WATCH at one time?
Can the hopper plus each of 4 possible"joeys" each and all FIVE watch a different live tv program simultaneously?

I believe the maximum number of Joey's is 3 per Hopper = 4 TV's connected. If more than 4 TV's need service then an additional Hopper is required. Each Hopper has 3 tuners, here is how it works with a Hopper and 3 Joey's, when all 4 TVs are in use, the customer can share live TV with one of the other 3 TVs (press the red button on the remote to access the TV Viewing Status screen and then use the remote’s up/down arrows to select a program from one of the tuners); watch On Demand
content, or watch DVR recordings.

EEEEK!!!

Am I slow or what?

the ads say the hopper can record 6 channels at one time....

But they just do not discuss how many you can watch LIVE.

If I have a hopper and 3 joeys, how many channels of LIVE TV can I watch simultaneously?

A Hopper DVR has 3 tuners = 3 channels of LIVE TV can you watch simultaneously, the 6 channel record magic is done by enabling a feature they call Prime Time Anytime, which uses 1 tuner to record the 4 major networks ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX, during prime time 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm. The other 2 tuners can then record shows of your choosing. The best part of this feature is when you watch any of those prime time recordings the next day or later the commercials can be skipped automatically.
