Dish VIP 211Z
Hello all. I bought a Pathway X1 bundle with the Dish VIP211z receiver less than six months ago. Have been very happy with the package until about 2 weeks ago. Now, every time I turn on the receiver I get a message that says WARNING 981 BOOT RECOVERY with some additional ID #s etc. Was wondering if anyone else has had this issue? Dish wants nothing to do with it since it is a portable unit. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom

Do you have Dish at home? If so don't mention anything RV related when you call in for support.
On the other hand, have you tried Dish 'chat' feature on their website? I've found you get to a better level of support when doing a chat. I haven't call support in years. The first techs you talk to are so clueless...

Hi, thanks for the reply. No, I don't have Dish service at home. This is my first time trying them out. I haven't tried the chat feature, so I'll give that a shot. You're right, it's pretty apparent that the techs I've spoken with are absolutely clueless. The last guy told me to make sure my receiver was plugged into a wall outlet, instead of a surge protector!! Ummm it's a truck, there is no wall outlet. Again, thanks for the reply.

From a bit a googling it appears to be usually a non-recoverable error. Sometimes fixed by placing on a fixed home antenna and allowing software update to continue to completion. If under warranty, get a replacement. If not under warranty and can't find a solution I suggest to replace/upgrade to a Wally.

Yeah, from the searching I've done, that's what I've gathered. Though i haven't been able to find any instances where this happened with the model receiver that I have. Guess I was hoping for, by some miracle, Dish had figured out a way to correct the error. Thanks for the reply

The 211 receivers had a new software update recently that my system missed due to not using the Motorhome for several weeks. In my case, all programming was not authorized. They couldn't send a reset to my unit until my system downloaded the new software. My old software was L747 and new is now L748.
The boot error code may be related to this software update that failed to complete. Check under the Installation Menu, the System Info tab and make sure it's L748. If not let the help desk tech know that as soon as you talk to them to cut out some of the canned troubleshooting questions they put you through.
