Garmin dezl 760 Custom POI Issue

You can have a very large number of Custom POIs in the 760. Setting them up in the 760 is a little different than with other Garmin GPS models.

The basic requirement is to create a root Folder – I call mine 760 POI. Then create a separate sub folder for each Custom POI File and put the particular POI fine in that sub folder. After this has been done, the whole stuff can be loaded into the 760 by using Garmin’s free POILoader application.

Just to be clear, the folder structure would look like the list below. The "---" isn’t part of the subfolder name. Since the forum formatting will remove any leading or multiple spaces, it just shows the indention to indicate the subfolder tree.

760 POI
---Campgrounds
---Flying J
---Passport America
---Rest Areas
---Something Else
---Something Else Also
---Something Else To
---Walmart

The sub folders will be sorted alphabetically in the 760. Five will appear on the screen at the time and you can go up and down the list by screens to find the one you need.

I wanted to sort the files in a particular way – I have more than 20 files. I added numbers to the beginning of a subfolder to move to the location I wanted. The File Structure then looked like this.

760 POI
---001 Rest Areas
---002 Campgrounds
---003 Flying J
---004 Walmart
---005 Passport America
---Something Else
---Something Else Also
---Something Else To

It sorted and showed on the 760 just as I wanted, but there was a problem. I could locate the POI as always, but could not set it as a destination. After an hour with the excellent Garmin Customer Service, a solution couldn’t be found. We decided that somehow the original POI files had become corrupt, and I would re-create them – bad job.

Before I started the re-creation job, I selected a POI from Something Else, and I could set it as a destination as always.

The 760 will not accept digits in the subfolder names for POI Files. It does accept digits in the root directory (760 POI). Removing the digits solved the problem.

Just a word of warning from my experience.

Good Luck!

Great info and great perseverance! If you wanted to maintain a sortable naming convention i would imagine that alpha characters could be used (eg)?
A - koa
B - passport America
C - .......

Yes, any alpha arrangement will work.

I have just finished talking with Garmin about what caused the problem and the solution.

They agree that it is an error and have sent a report up the line in hopes the issue will be addressed in a future firmware update.

Good Luck!
