Garmin RV 890

The timing was perfect. Our previous gps crashed and we wanted a new one before hitting the road the first of this month. The 890 is a lot of money so may not be for everyone. We do like it a lot, huge screen, on the go traffic reports, weather with live radar, and voice activation.

Overall this thing is a tablet that also has the GPS we rv'ers need. Comes with several mounting options that are substantial. Here is a link if interested.

Does the 890 have lifetime map updates or do you have to pay for them?

I wish Garmin would just sell their RV software as an app and then let you choose what type of device you want to run it on (phone or small tablet or large tablet or iPad or Android) based on your needs. I bought the RV 780 last year and like it. However, I would prefer a larger screen, zippier response, and the long battery life tablets offer.

I also would switch to a Garmin app, without hesitation, if it was offered. Garmin features are outstanding but I do not want to add another monitor to my existing dash collection.

I just ordered the 890RV. Once it gets here, I'm going to replace the factory unit. The old unit removed weighed 10 pounds!!!!. I'll post the install once I've received it. I just finished replacing the 32" TV with a 40". Here's a preview:

Garmin had an Android and iPhone navigation app years ago called viago but they abandoned the development of it.

I'm interested in what you regard as "substantial"?
The vacuum/suction models don't stick to no smooth surfaces.
The winshields on RVs are too far away.
There is not "friction" mount.
One thing I have seen is the "screw down" mount.
Did I miss something?
Thanks

We use this “bean bag” which just sits on top of the dash. it never moves! Rough roads, heavy braking, it just stays put....easy peasy!

Do you use it on the 890?
I have one from another, but the arm is too short, and the 8" unit does not fit.
Garmin told me they don't have that model for 890?

Ram makes mounts that will work. I am sure there are lots of tablet mounts on Amazon. Call gpscity and ask about a mount. They have hard to find accessories.

If the 800 has that ball mount Gaon has a bean bag mount with that Ball mount. They also have a plastic base that accepts the arm. That base case double face taped to the dash

The Garmin 890 has a larger ball mount and I haven't found a friction bag that will work with it. I used an adhesive suction pad on the dash and then cut out the suction cup part of the mount. I 3D printed an insert that went into where the suction cup just was. I then glued that to the adhesive pad mounted on my dash. Works great.
