Question Garmin RV1090

Considering buying a Garmen Rv1090 and wondering if there are any comments regarding this model? Currently using Iphone for navigation but that uses a lot of data streaming. Any suggestions/comments?

Hello,

First, you might want to change your spelling to GARMIN, to help you better in searches, as well as this post.

There's been SOOOO many posts about the Garmin, including the 1090, that I hate to start a new one here. However, I can tell you that I am on the Beta Test Team for the 8xx and 10xx series and feel confident in telling you that there's really no competition out there in terms of inclusive functions, routing, and ease of operation for an RV.

The big thing about the 10xx is they're BIG, and can be rotated vertically which, after years of horizontal use, I'm finding to be a preferred orientation. I love their mount, too.

I'm not going to get into the "ensuing" argument about using the "free this or that", like Google, Waze, Apple, or a myriad of other apps. They're not even a distant second when it comes to ease of use, TRUCK/RV specific routing, easy route and waypoint modifications including truck stops, rest stop, detours, etc.

Free apps DO serve a purpose in my life of navigation; I'm as tech-saavy as they come and even am a Pro subscriber of RVLIFE'S app through RVTW. Their app is anemic in all terms, but slowly improving. That said, the only thing I'd like better on the Garmin would be to allow an easier workflow between RVTW and the Garmin; to which there really is no easy way at all. So, I input my trips/routes manually and this brings me to the final point...

For planning your trips, routes, etc. in advance, once again, there is not even a close second to a Garmin.

Hope this helps.

Garmen RV1090

Directly from garmin.com you can also buy the 780 which is an improved model from the 770 which I have been using for 3 years. I like the 770 and if it died tomorrow I would buy the 780.

I just don’t need a 10” screen for $700 when the 7xx series with a 7” screen does all I need for $400.

Just something to think about. They all use the same map data, and similar route algorithms. No doubt the 1090 has more bells and whistles…..but I have no complaints with the less expensive device either.

Pasdad. I have the 770. Whenit was still under warranty it died. They sent me a new one. 4 years later it died. I was devastated. Brst gps ever. New ones were not available. I bought an Garmin otr 700
Big pos. Sold it. I finally got some good support and revived the770. When did the 780 come out? I use it for trucking and in the RV. I really liked the "up ahead" feature of the 770. Does the 780 have that feature. Is the software similar? Does the map look similar? Some of the more exoensive Garmin teuck units will take you right to the loading dock. Does the 780 have that feature. Thanks.

I don’t have the 780 currently, but some rudimentary research gave me the impression that it was a updated 770, so I can’t answer your specific questions.

If you find the answers, report back as I would find them interesting also.

If you can find a RV790 it's an updated model from the 780. It has a 7" screen and can be rotated from horizontal to vertical like the 1090. I bought the 790 as an upgrade from my old 760 on Amazon a few months ago for $349. I really like that it's an Android based tablet and works great.

The 1090 is great. I love it. I use it vertically mounted on my drivers window where it is in front of the pillar. It doesn't block the view.
