Google maps versus Garmin GPS

These 2 never seem to be in sync in my case. Any way to use google maps without depleting cell phone data? Other options? Thanks.

Google maps allows you to download map areas. You have to pinch and zoom to get an area.
Then it references that area when no WiFi or you turn data off.
It asks every so many months if you want to redownload that area it's under your google profile called offline maps

Depending on which Garmin you have they will never be the same. Google maps assumes you are in a 4 wheeler and will take you on residential streets.

I have the Garmin 770 and love it. The difference between is Google maps does not take into account for the height, length and weight of RV. Google is for cars only. The Garmin configures to your RV. Good Luck.

One other option is https://copilotgps.com/en-us/rv-navigation/. It is a standalone app that does not use phone data. It takes into account the size and weight of your RV and routes you accordingly. It is subscription based @ $30/year.

I would check reviews for Copilot. You need a tablet with GPS chip or a tablet and GPS receiver. We have used Copilot for years as a backup to a Garmin 770 and have found it to have spotty performance at best when on the road. We mostly use it for trip planning.

I love using stand alone GPS even in the car. Very handy to use the built-in database of POI (points of interest) in places where there is NO cell signal.

MANY times we are driving back in the car from site-seeing someplace, and want to pickup some groceries, or fast food before returning to the camp ground and the cell phone WILL NOT pull anything up due to really slow or non-existent cell service.

NO PROBLEM …..simply punch in “grocery stores” or “fast food” category on the Garmin, and a list comes up of places to go sorted by distance from our exact position. And away we go.

If we relied on our phones we would be out of luck.

We use Google Maps for trip planning and the GPS to get there. Chuck

We use Google Maps plus common sense, with heavy use of satellite view when looking ahead at fuel stops and especially at RV park entry/exit.
