Help with Garmin GPS
Just purchased a new Garmin RV 770 GPS. For those of you that have them, how do you like it? I used it once already to test it. I took roads that I knew would handle my 5er but it tried to route me way out of the way. Initially, lost confidence in it...any suggestions?

I think they all route stupid sometimes.
Most of the time they work great especially if you make a wrong turn and get lost.
The 770 is very large screen and easy to use.
I have had good luck finding campgrounds with it.

Make sure you have the parameters for your RV set correctly. Our Garmin would try to route us 10 miles out of the way to go to our favorite campground when trying it out new. It turned out the weight was set too high, and it was routing us around a little bridge barely longer than the RV.
It's just a little computer trying to do what it's told. If it's told not to route you over a bridge where you're a few pounds overweight, it'll do its dangest not to.

I would definitely agree with the above statement. You need to set it up for your rig's parameters and how you want to be routed (most direct route or fastest time).Sometimes what the GPS sees as the fastest route will actually take longer due to numerous traffic signals on the route it has chosen because it only uses miles and speed limits to calculate travel time. GPS are far from perfect but are a good tool for most people

I bought the Garmin GPS 780 2 months ago. We have used it quite a bit including on a couple trips in the RV. We are exceptionally pleased with the unit. Best of luck to you!

We have the same unit. As suggested make sure it is set up for your unit. Our has done a very good job taking us from Ohio to the Gulf coast, and back without any issues. Just remember when you are not towing turn it off, it does not know you don't have the RV behind you.
I forgot one time, it took us 5-6 miles out of the way to go around the corner to go to eat in Stone Mountain Ga.

I have had several Garmin navigation system. My personal feeling is, it's only avg for accuracy and trustworthy. My last three month RV trip and 8500 miles I stopped replying on it and most of the time it wasn't even turned on. Got tired of making u-turns.

Welcome to the world of a GPS
Yep, they can be a challenge but for sure are a great device as long as your input is correct. Mine put me on a back 2 track dirt road in New Brunswick, sent me in a circle in Missouri and tried to route me 100 miles out of the way in Utah. Then there was that too narrow 120 degree turn off a bridge in Maryland.
I've found that a paper map used in conjunction with the Garmin to add some waypoints works well. I even bought a converter to plug in the 110volt receptacle for 12 volts DC to plot our trips in the comfort of my living room.
What it boils down to is that your input to the device is how it calculates the trip. It's just a dumb piece of electronic gear that needs your brain to operate the way you need it to work.

I like our Garmins and have owned several, but rarely do I accept its recommended routings without at least a spot check. Especially on trips where local knowledge of traffic or road conditions is a factor. Every once in awhile it will route you down a goat track simply to save 100 ft of distance or 15 seconds of drive time and that can be really frustrating, but when it finds you a path in a strange city or re-routes you around a traffic jam, it's a god-send.

People complain that GPS will get them lost, but dang, I couldn't count the hours I've spent totally lost trying to use paper maps.
I've been using various brands for a few years in my cars, on my motorcycles, and now in the RV. Garmins have been consistently my favorites.
