Hi Jamie-
Some phones tether by USB better than others. Make sure that you don't have any settings on the phone that would turn off a tether after a certain amount of time or if it isn't actively being used for data.
For one of my low-cost cellular connections (with Visible) I have to connect the hotspot phone via WiFi because it doesn't tether well by USB. There's really very little speed difference between using WiFi versus USB.
I would suggest connecting the phone via WiFi to see if it is more stable that way. My phone that doesn't tether well, is rock solid stable when connected by WiFi.
