I have been using voice to text conversion and voice commands to gadgets for years and the technology just jeeps getting better, albeit one must be able to clearly articulate thoughts to convey and proper word pronounciation is paramount and even then a good spell and grammer check is necessary when producing a formal document to send to someone, however technical terms and the use of a more extensive vocabulary is still limited based on my experience. I suspect that some people who are not using thier native tongue might experience problems if they have an accent in thier speech.
Back in the day when I used to dictate letters to my secretary directly, and through the use of a dictaphone, or telephone recording device, I was still talking to a real person and one could be more flexible in how the technology was used, but now, when I do not have a Navigator (usually DW) , and only then, do I use voice commands to the GPS, make Phone calls etc while driving but I find the clear thought required to construct a letter by voice is very much a distraction, so other than simple comands to keep hands and thoughts free while driving I make certain I am distraction free (meaning not driving) to use the technology in drafting anything complicated. I do send emails/text messages by voice often but these are short responses and I have responses read to me in text to voice conversion which is also improving somewhat.
Suffice to say speech to text conversion and vice versa has come a long way and can help us become safer behind the wheel vs using our hands and eyes fixated on some device but anything that takes attention away from the task at hand does dimish ones ability to detect and mentally process what is happening around us.
So IMHO, the technology is great and can improve the speed of communication, especially with phone keyboards but everything has its limitations.
I sometimes record voice clips on my phone and send those as an email attachment to several people in one shot, it saves several phone calls and this is done over the data network so no LD charges apply. It seems to work better than voice to text conversion in many cases wherein more colloguail language and tone can be used.
Looking for testimonal and comments from others who use Voice Command, Voice to Text and Text to Voice SW.
Thanks
