I need a sanity check on this

I visited a Dish network retailer yesterday to explore options for my MH. I have a Winegard Travl’r configured for Dish.

I was told that in order to activate a Dish receiver, it has to be hooked up to a “normal” sat antenna. For the life of me, I don’t see how a Travl’r wouldn’t qualify as normal.

Was I given bum scoop?

Not sure what he meant. If you call Dish, they’ll send out the equipment and then you just call them to activate it.

Dish isn't backwards compatible with everything, my old MV3500A was only sort of compatible with Wally. I think mainly because the antenna was self-aiming, and the Wally wants to drive these days. Also I wasn't able to receive hi-def. I screwed a Playmaker to the roof, it was a pretty painless upgrade.

Also, look at the dishformyrv.com website, they have some cool stuff or RV's. Among them, if your rig is in storage you don't have to keep making payments on the plan, just stop paying and they will unhook you. Takes five minutes to get hooked back up by making a payment in the app. Also it allows you to easily sign in to local stations as you travel, so you don't need to upgrade your OTA antenna.

I believe what the DISH rep was talking about is when a new receiver is first activated it has to download the latest firm ware version before it will operate. This is almost impossible to do with a dome antenna since it only sees one satellite and the receiver is looking for a different satellite. The Trav'ler is just like a home antenna an should work without a problem. Obviously the DISH rep doesn't know the difference between the two antenna types.

Do you have a Trav'ler with the new Hybrid LNB? You can tell if there are two coax cables from the turret to LNB instead of three. If so, there is a kit available from Winegard called the SKDPHPI. This has a DPH42 Power inserter and 4 way splitter. Wallies won't work with the Hybrid LNB won't without it. With that kit and a Wally, installation is easy on a Trav'ler. You start the installation and when it reaches a point in the setup, there is a screen that tells you to call Dish for activation. They will need the serial number on the Wally and the card number which will be displayed in the setup screen.

Well said.
You must have Hybrid Trav’ler to set-up & operate an H3
Wally can be set-up on a single sat Dome dish. Although the first time thru, Wally can take a long while to set-up on a single sat Dome dish vs Hybrid Trav’ler.

So as Lt Dan suggested…
- “there is a kit available from Winegard called the SKDPHPI. This has a DPH42 Power inserter and 4 way splitter.”

That’s what you need to update your system to Hybrid style for Hopper3 & Wally.

I don’t think I want the Hopper 3. This system for our motorhome is going to be scaled down from what we have at home. I have DTV at home.

I am finding Dish’s internet presence to be less than helpful for my application. What is the next step down from Hopper 3? Hopper Duo? I envision having this sat system on only two of the six televisions in the motorhome.

By the way, can anyone interpret these coax inputs? Those on the right, what exactly would hook up there? That box you see is a blu ray player. I think the one labeled main feed would be the sat connection from the antenna. Not sure what aux feed would be.
