I-Phone for a Digital Idiot

I was thinking about buying a Apple I-PHone from Cellular One or from Amazon . They both have NEW phones, the older models for a more reasonable price. All info on this would be helpful. Thanks Jim Senn Athol Idaho

There will be a bit of a learning curve but the interface is somewhat intuitive. Once you get the swipe gestures and basics down you’ll probably enjoy it. Each available iPhone will have an amazing camera on it for taking pictures and video. And it’s quite easy to share them with friends and family as well.

You could even sign up for a short class on functionality at an Apple Store after you purchase it. They are free. You might benefit from if you’ve never used an iPhone before.

I would get the newest model you can afford as it will receive updated software for longer. All models work basically the same so there is no benefit in an older model from an ease of use standpoint. You can see how to do pretty much anything using You Tube so as long as you are familiar with the basics you shouldn't have any issues.

You might be happy with the iPhone SE. It Doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the fancy, more expensive models, but you'll like the price. Look for the SE second edition or third edition. The SE is still in production and will work with the latest firmware updates.

The photos might not be as grand and the later models, but photos is the wife's thing. She has thousand of headless people and people half out of the frame, but they are nice...If photos are your thing by all means advance to more of the current models with at least 512 gig memory, or more.

I bought my SE when my iPhone 4 (5?) wouldn't update any more and happy with it.

The Apple support is amazing, as is their extended warranty. I also second the suggestion for the newest model SE. it has less bells and whistles than some of the more expensive models, but has the advantage of the Apple operating system and support.

Also - Apple offers 0% financing which is a nice perk. Starting at $429 or about $17/month if you go with their zero percent financing.

Ditto on getting the newest model you can afford. Remember Apple has in the past slowed the performance on older model phones. But even if that does not happen at some point every phone will slow down as it ages because the software updates are often tuned for the newest model phone hardware. whatever you get remember that the phone will "wear out" the main problem will be with battery life. The batteries will eventually fail and could become a fire hazard. My son had a battery swell up after about 18 months of use. Personally, I trad in my phones after about 36 months for the newest model available. At 36 months or less you will get the best trad in value which lessens the pocketbook pain for the newer phone.

IMPO the iPhone IS the best choice you can make for a cell phone, period. The security features are by far UNSURPASSED ! I worked evenings and nights for the last ten years of my working life so all my banking and bill paying was done on my iPhone or iPad. NEVER had any security or hacking issues. I’ve had iPhones and iPads since they came out and Never looked back. As far as battery or phone issues, remember that phones and batteries ARE consumables so yes updating is always going to be a thing you will do. I usually trade or buy a New phone for the wife and I after about 3 to 4 years. I don’t think you should be intimidated by new technology as I’m sure you have friends or family that can help. Apple has excellent support. Choose your carrier wisely though because if you travel you want Good coverage on the road. I have purchased the last 3 phones for my wife and I off EBay for about half of the retail price. You Must be careful though and be sure the phone is Not black listed ! Only buy Sealed, Never Used, Clear phones from there from a Good seller! If you by from a carrier compare phone plans and options but Don’t be pushed into anything. Also be aware that if you buy from the carrier and finance it your commitment to that carrier is greater than than purchasing a phone outright. If you choose to purchase outright from eBay or Amazon be sure it is compatible with the carrier you choose. You Must Shop Around then make a unpressured decision.

OTOH, I prefer to stay a few models south of the cutting edge. Fewer $, mostly the same performance, don't need a super-duper camera. And I'm not likimg what Apple has done with IOS 18.2 so trying to avoid it as long as possible. I'm using an IP13.

The concern is support for security patches. This is why it's typically wise to keep your OS updated, regardless of feature sets. Once vulnerabilities are known, it is only a matter of time before they are widely deployed and utilized against you. Sometimes it's as simple as just having your phone on, or visiting any website and someone can access your device.

As someone with a background in information security, please keep your devices updated with the latest security patches. And never use the same password twice.

You must be very cautious buying from EBAY. I got burned on my last three attempts to purchase things on EBAY. I ordered and paid and no product delivered. Fortunately, I got the money refunded. Be sure the product is coming from a US seller. Overseas vendors are the most likely candidates for trying to game the system.

If you are in fact going to use the smart phone features then you probably want the newest you can afford.

If you just want to use it as a telephone, then the SE is fine, I used to have one and I liked it.

The manufacturers usually provide software support (patches) for 5-7 years, which in the industry is called end-of-life.

Regardless, my advice is to never do anything financial with your cell phone.

Check out Walmart for refurbished iphones. They have SE models for as low as $79.00. Unlocked, so you can use any provider you like.

Been an EBay member for 20 years buying and selling
Your Guaranteed the item you purchased or your money back
Have had to request a refund maybe 3 times
And Yes, only buy from USA sellers
I only pay with PayPal so my purchasers are protected

Why not buy from a carrier. What cell phone provider are you using I have a iPhone 12 Pro Max, battery is now at 70%. I spend right much time on my iPhone looking at stuff. Verizon had a good deal a couple of days ago $5.50 for a iPhone 16 Pro Max 256g. If it comes up again I’m getting it. I have a Verizon credit card that gives me 4% off fuel. I bought my granddaughter a iPhone 14 in 2023 for $.28 a month
