We use one of our 4G Droid phones as a wifi hotspot rather than using a MiFi and have had excellent results on Verizon through some of the most mountainous and remote areas of the western US. Those who say 4G service is limited to major metro areas are out of touch with the expansion that has occurred in the past year. Yesterday I was on a 4G connection in Cedar City UT and a month ago in Bonners Ferry ID; you don't get much more remote than places like that.
I don't believe there has been a campground we have been at this year at which we haven't had at least have 3G service. 3G speeds vary between ~300kbps-1.5Mbps; at the upper end you can even stream low resolution video successfully. When you can get a 4G connection the speeds beat everything except FIOS (~8-25Mbps).
We use our hotspot phone through a WiFiRanger Go router which makes it possible for our internal network (laptops, printer, Roku, satellite receivers, etc) to shift between campground wifi and our own hotspot with the push of only one button necessary.

I bought the Verizon 4G hotspot without a plan and the cost per Gb is $60 for 2Gb good for a month or 30 days. I am going to switch to a new IPad without a plan so the cost per Gb will be $10 and you can tether up to five devices. When we have more time to travel we may consider a plan.

We use a combination of Motosat F1 which always works if the dish can "see" the satellite. Meaning that only if there is a tree in the way or some other obstruction will it not work. I also have Verizon 4G. That works well most of the time. But there are large areas wireless internet does not work. When wireless does work it is almost always faster than satellite. We also use park wifi when available. Which is frequently.
Our normal set up is to push the button on the Motosat and just let it find the sat. Then we just leave it on. And use other sources when needed.

Verizon and AT&T can still charge you for non-700Hz bandwith if caught. Verizon includes tethering on upper end plans only now so AT&T followed suit. Still allows them to come back at you if not on those plans.
AT&T lost a ruling in a lawsuit on one case for tethering on a grandfathered unlimited plan. No trickle down to users, it's a case by case issue according to the court. So if caught they'd likely drop the issue if pressed to court, who wants to go through all that? Until it's announced in a press release it doesn't exist according to AT&T. That being said I still do it as they don't want the negative press.

I installed a Wilson Trucker antenna years ago. I could connect it to my old 3G phone that had an antenna port. I have not found a newer phone with an antenna port so I have been stuck for a while. Now AT&T has a Mobile Hotspot Elevate 4G that has an antenna port. I think I may have to give it a try.
Being able to use the antenna certainly helps the phones signal out in the boonies.

Hey Razzman, the blablabla sounds sarcastic and directed at you, as I re- read the post..I apologize for that...The blablabla was meant to describe how darn long this issue has been chewed on by everyone involved..and so confusing to the layman. What I do know..., its the type of situation that will drag on. In the meantime, clever people will help us layman to stay connected...

Hey no worries! Being in IT for a large company you learn to never take anything seriously, I get it all day long.
Yeah this issue has been ongoing way too long I agree. My opinion is that it should never have happened at all as you've already paid for your data, how you use it is your business. BUT the wireless industry is greedy and has always gotten away with what it has until enough public dissent or lawsuits forces them to change. Now that lawsuits have been files and won it will be alot easier to fight if they press the issue imo. Until then i'll just keep doing it.
Btw the sole suit against AT&T that they lost was not for tethering but for throttling his unlimited data plan at just before 2gb of use. His "illegal" tethering came out during the trial. It went against AT&T anyway, AT&T was going to fight the ruling but decided it was better to not. Imo this just proves they know their wrong on that count.
