IT Help

I have an older computer with a lot of video production software. It will not connect to the internet under any circumstances. Any helpful info would be greatly appreciated. Internet Explorer doesn't work.
The computer has XP Pro as the OS.

How about some more info.
Are you connected via wifi or cat 5 cable?
If wifi, did you check your wifi setting to see if it was turned off?
If wifi, can you connect to your router?
If you have a smart phone, will it connect to your router and the internet, without data use turned on?
What have you done since last connection, such as added or updated software?

I think XP was towed out to sea and sunk.
I had a mess of hand me down built for XP computers. They all ran Win10. But they were all painfully slow.
I know it's hard to let go. Support for XP ended some seven years ago and IE11 is the last remaining version. IE11 will be supported to run within Edge until 2029. It is still supported to run within Win10 for only some versions. Win10 support will end 10/14/2025.
Chances are likely that your dated video software will not run under Win10 or 11.
Sorry. Hope this helps.

Connected by cable to my router. I am able to access the router with iPhone and iPad.
I know that support for xp has stopped. I was hoping that another browser (firefox or something similar). I don't think google chrome will work with my current OS.

In order to install a new version of windows, will I have to format the hard drive before installation? l am aware most of my video software will probably not work after this.

Thanks to all of you for your help. HAGD!

PS: my other computers connect by wi fi to the internet.

Did it ever connect to the internet since you've had it?

You might try one of the usb Wi-Fi dongle deals. They are pretty cheap. It May be that the nic card drivers in the xp os have gone south. Ymmv.

Time to let it go. You won't even find support for it from the manufacturer anymore.

What was the last thing you did to it before it quit working?

Click on "Start"

Go up to "Settings"

Click on "Network Connections"

There should be an icon "Local Area Connection" It should say Connected, Firewalled

If the cops see that computer they're going to think you stole it from a museum.

2X; as an example this low-end laptop is many times more powerful than what the OP has and costs only $200. I understand that he has a sunk investment in software, but he might find that the software vendors have promotional pricing for people who want to update:

Used to wait for Tinkie-Winkie, Dipsy, and La-La to come rambling over the hill.

I believe XP had restore points. Do a research on that function. Restoring it to an earlier time might solve the issue.

I too believe a cheap usb wi-fi plug in may get you going again.

But it is so time to upgrade.

You will be astonished at the "rendering time" improvement with the new processors.
I have used various softwares over the years doing hundreds of hours of video editing and DVD processing.

Windows Movie maker was a great, simple, and rather fast software and I have it on some old computers but it is just so slow I do not use it any longer.

The new "Movie Maker" I'm using at the present to put together a vacation video seems to be very friendly and incredibly fast.

I have not purchased the license yet so am using the limited version but so far it seems to be very friendly and fast.
