KVH R4 Dome doesn't work when it is hot outside
My KVH R4 satellite dish (with a black dome), that I've been (mostly) happy with, has developed a problem with heat.
One day, sometime in the afternoon last summer, the dish began searching for a satellite. I turned on the TV and found there was no signal on either line (running a non-HD Directv two channel DVR). I did all of my standard troubleshooting on the DVR and cables with no change. I turned off the power to stop the persistent moaning and groaning. After a couple of hours researching the issue (I found nothing), I powered it up and checked it again. After a very short search, all was well and continued to be, so I assumed it was just something temperamental (temperamental is not unusual with this system).
Next day, it happened again. Switched the power off, got on the roof, pulled the dome and cleaned, tightened and reseated everything on the dish I could find. Put it all back together and all was well--for an hour. Pulled the dome off again, this time without removing power. The dish was searching, but after a minute or two, it settled down and stopped. Got off the roof and checked the TV. All was well. Put the dome back on and an hour or so later, well...
The condition persists and pops up anytime the ambient temperature gets around 85 deg F, or in the lower 80's if the sky is cloudless.
So, genius that I am, I've determined I have either the LNB or main board to replace.
My questions are, is there a special place where I can slap the dish into submission? Failing that, how do I determine which component is faulty and where can that component be found for sale for less than the price of a new dish?
Thanks,
Steve
