I stayed with directv because it is the only streaming service that has BallySports (regional MLB coverage), and also we were used to the programming pkg.

Can you still record new programs when you are away from home?

I'm only familiar with the directv stream, but yes you can set programs to record/record series/ then watch what you have recorded much in the same manner as you do with the satellite version...it's just not on a hard drive DVR in your house or MH, since you don't have any actual directv hardware. The basic service provides about 30hrs of dvr space for each account, but for $10 per month you can get unlimited hours (programs auto delete after 90 days). The streaming service has it recorded. So no matter where you are, if you log in to the directv stream with your user/pw, then it's always the same no matter where you are. The "channel guide" with directv stream looks pretty much the same as the guide on the satellite version, but you will be using the roku remote which is different and takes a little getting used to. It's really much smaller and simpler, no numbers so you have to get used to scrolling to the channel you want, no big deal really. I also subscribe to Netflix and Amazon Prime and can easily connect to those thru the Roku as well.

I have never had an interest in a DVR. Especially these days as I don't see the point. Pretty much everything that gets put on TV is available immediately after to stream. Most channels will allow you to access their streams for no added cost other than you have to watch commercials as long as that channel is a part of your TV package. What typically happens is you go the the channels website and they will ask you to log in to your providers website to prove you actually get their channel. You do that the first time and then don't have to do it again.

There are several different kinds of Roku you can buy. I have one that is about 4x4 inches and an inch thick. Others I have look just like a USB memory stick but actually plugs right into your HDMI port. Google them to see what features matter to you. They all need three things:
1.) Power, best to get that with an AC adapter that is usually included. Some TV's have an available USB plug that might work.

2.) HDMI. If the Roku itself doesn't actually plug right into the TV's HDMI port then a cable goes between them.
3.) An internet source. This will be a wifi connection to your router.

After it's hooked up and you can see it on your TV then you need to log in/sign up for the various apps such as Netflix/Amazon/what ever.
