However, that's not to say that it won't work. Anyone tried this combination or know one way or another if it works?

The Franklin U602 is a Sprint 3G/4G Hotspot USB device. I can see why the folks at WIFIRanger would not have it on their list of approved USB modems, unless, of course, you are looking for the redundancy offered or want to connect some of your Ethernet hard-wired devices to the Hotspot network.
I'm sure that you could configure the WiFiRanger to use the modem but, that said, there may be other alternatives out there for you to choose from.
I can also say that customer reviews of the U602 are not so great. And remember it's on the Sprint network. Your coverage for 4G is limited (as well as 3G, if you're out West.
I have the WiFiRanger with a Millenicom U760 on Verizon. $59 a month for 20GB of 3G. I also have a Droid Razr 3G/4G with FoxFi that turns the RAZR into a HotSpot on a Verizon unlimited data plan. I fire that up and join the WiFiRanger to the RAZR, as a wireless connection, for the times a free/fast wireless isn't available. I use it to stream to a wired ROKU and, of course, print, surf and email.
Lots of choices and configurations out there to choose from. Take a look at what your requirements and location are and then make a decision.
Hope this helps some.
