No Locals on Direct TV

Hi All
I have been in the Miami area and changed the local address from Indiana to the Miami area and have received local stations on the sat (NOT HD but SD) just fine. I now have moved to the Panama City area so I called, 2 hrs, and changed my local address to here but NO LOCAL CHANNELS. They sent a tech out and he said the locals come thru on sat 99 and they have the mpeg4 system in place. I can't receive the signal on 99 sat so no locals. Not a huge deal but just want to know if they are correct or just don't know what they are talking about.
Anyone in the FL panhandle receiving locals on Dome or 18" dish?
Anyone know what to do to receive the locals on 101 sat?

Thanks

I have looked around a bit and don't see any round dishes that I usually see at the campground which tells me that they can't get sat 99 so no locals.
What say you Satellite Bill?

Are you getting the networks on the 390 - 398 channels? If not, you can get them by giving them a metro NY or LA, CA. service address.

Good luck

If i understand you correctly are you saying the DNS channels are from Ny or LA, Ca. So if you give them an address say for NY that you will turn on the DNS channels and you can get them anywhere ?

I dont think this would work for Dish because they do not have any DNS channels.

Don`t know Dish I`v got Directv.

I use a NJ service address and get DNS on my boat and MH up and down the east coast, as far west as Athens GA. and Buffalo NY. I`m watching CBS , right now, in the Florida Keys.

The locals for Panama City are HO only which means they would be on spot beam channels on 99 or 103. Since someone has mentioned 99 they are probably on that bird. You need a Slimline dish with a 3LNB setup to get that. You can kiss off most locals on DirecTV if you only have an 18" dish (which is 101 only - and is basically most of the cable only channels in SD). As noted above, your best best for over the air channels is to register as an RV account and get access to the DNS channels (which are East Coast or West Coast feeds of the primary networks).

I have been through that "no local stations" a few times myself. The last time, I called DTV and asked why? I was given some drivel about regulations, etc., when the tech said "well, you can get locals on your batwing"! So I said "why then, do I need DTV"? So, I cancelled them and use the park cable or the batwing only. Works for me!

If tv reception is important to you, ditch the dome for a Traveler Sat ant. The next iteration is to get DNS service from direct. Then you will get the network feeds out of New York or California depending on what you choose. The final iteration is to install the Genie. Then you will be in TV heaven. I depend on the above system and use the batwing for the local locals.

SOOO if I want locals in a market that puts the locals on sat 99 or 103 only I could give a NY address and get that feed. Good to know.
I have the Geni system in the RV an it is nice to record programs on the ota channels. Question is which markets are putting locals on the HD sat? Is there a app for that?
How long will it be until all the markets are HD only and the domes and 18" dishes are obsolete, except for the NY feed? Someone needs to adapt the dome to HD.

Thanks for the help

If I understand twinboat correctly he did not sign up for an RV account. I think what he did was to call directv and give a NY address. I am guessing here and would love to have someone that knows tell me but, what i am guessing is that because Directv has a DNS service they do not have a spot beam for Local Channels in NY if you live in NY you get the same ones the DNS feeds use. By giving a new york address they just turn on DNS to your unit.

Once again I do not think this will work if you have Dish Only if you have Directv. The federal courts will not allow dish to have DNS accounts.

I lived in NY and then NJ.

When I got my KVH, DirecTV box for my boat, I added it to my home account.

Last year I sold my house, bought an 18" dish and tripod and put my standard definition box, from the house, in the MH.

I never upgraded to High Definition, because I couldn't use it on the boat anyway.

Enjoy

You are quite right. We live in the LA market and have a S&B account. Our local major networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX) travel with us wherever we go in the US without an RV account. (This is what you get with the "DNS" service.)

True "locals" like channel 5, 9 and 13, however, are spot-beamed and drop off about 200 miles from downtown LA. (I do a Slimline setup every time we stop so I am not really familiar with the 101 only issues. I just read about them here and on satellite forums.)

It's not that DTV puts the local channels ONLY on 99 or 103 in some markets, it's that the SD versions of those local channels are on 119 and you can't receive that unless you're using a Slimline 5. DTV still transmits SD versions of all its channels (I think), and most of those are on 101. But some of the smaller market locals in SD are coming from 119.

It used to be that pretty much everyone had a Slimline 5 at their homes so none of this mattered, but most new installations are using the SWM3 which only gets 99, 101 and 103 since most people are getting HD anyway and there's little need for 119.
