I've never used the item, but it looks like it tests for bad power pole conditions. I use the progressive dynamics surge protector since it also monitors for all the bad power pole conditions continuously and will not connect power to the rig if there is a bad condition. In addition, it adds low voltage/high voltage and surge protection in a continous manner so that if any condition occurs after you are plugged in, you will be automatically disconnected.

Yeah, $120 is pretty steep for a box that only tests. Of course, the P-D surge protector/analyzer is a lot more than that too. Bu *** provides ongoing protection and problem detection, where as this tester is a one-time thing. Probelms, if they occur, may not begin until sometime after you hook up - maybe even days later.

Personally, I prefer to check my connections BEFORE I plug in AND have the other protection devices also. That said--I think the PowerPal is a good option for those that are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with using a VOHM.
I use a Fluke meter to check before hooking up.
