since you will be getting a new computer get one with SSD rather than a hard disk! it is amazing how much this helps!

i do not use windows 11. but with every new computer i have bought with the operating system preinstalled you have to spend time deleting all the unneeded bloatware they have installed.

also, do you use application software on your existing computer such as office, personal finance software, tax software, etc? if so you will probably need to install updated versions of all of this software. and make sure you have a plan to migrate all the data files associated with these applications.

one thing that is pretty nice in the windows 10/11 world is the one drive and icloud external storage. i use dropbox to automatically back up all my date files. one drive and i cloud do similar things but i do not know if they are fully automatic as dropbox is. anyway i dropped my pc and broke it which required a new pc purchase. after reinstalling all the application software i was able to restore all data files from the cloud and didn't lose a thing! that's impressive!

What you describe is pretty common these days. All my files are automatically stored in the Microsoft OneDrive. Switching to a new computer is a task that takes less than a hour.

Bought a Lenovo a month ago with 11 on it. At first it was a bust but slowly things are coming into place. It is a touch screen but I use a mouse because the DW has a thing about fingerprints on the screen. My old puter is a 7 machine

Windows 11, is the bane of my existence. Six months in and I'm still wanting to take my HP laptop back and demand W 10 be installed.

I know I'm a slow learner, but some of the changes from W 10 are ridiculous.
The new mail has no (known to me) way to block spam senders from e mail or delete spam addresses.
Pictures always need to be directed to open in paint instead of automatically opening there.

My godson, who was hired by Microsoft 4 months ago, couldn't help with some of my complaints. I asked him specifically about blocking (removing)spam addresses and he couldn't help. W 10 had the feature and they forgot to carry it forward.

With regard to the Windows Mail app, why bother to use it? I read all my mail through the Gmail interface regardless of what mail server it originates on.

If you want pictures to open in Paint have you gone to Apps-Default and set Paint as the app you want to have opened for jpg, png, and other similar formats?

There are always people on this forum and similar ones who are willing to help.

Wow, I asked and did I ever get an ear full. Appreciate all the responses and just hope I can remember everything I need to when I get to the store. Since alll I use a computer for is getting on the various Forums, sending and receiving e-mails, searching for answers to questions I may have about my medical problems, and of course playing a few different games, all my questions may not mean anything.

But gotta do something since my Vanguard account won't let me in for some time now as my Browser is outdated and the Browser won't update since the OS is so outdated. Both Firefox and Chrome.

Kinda like trying to remember what you want to ask your doctor at the next appointment, and even taking a list with you it seems he or his nurse starts talking about something you had no idea was coming and being very slow to come up with new questions it goes right over my head.

Will keep reading all these post and with Black Friday coming up there should be some good deals out there.
Thanks again guys.

Boy am I ever lost on technology. I have no idea what the above paragraph said, or what it does. I always kinda felt like I was driving a Model A in a Lamborgina era. Now I must be using a horse and buggy.

I don't have a Win 11 box so I can't test, but I suspect blocking spam is probably done while looking at the list in your inbox and right clicking on the piece of e-mail (don't open it) from someone you want to block and selecting "block" from the menu that will open. That will redirect future emails into your junk folder where it can be ignored. There is probably also an option to report the e-mail as spam or phishing....

My solution to this situation is multiple computers. I find it easier to throw hardware at the problem than try to pick a singe "best" OS/machine and end up compromising on something. So for finance/secure stuff I use a chromebook. That's all it does, no surfing, email, extra software/malware. For my home network, small business, multimedia and general computing I run linux, mostly Manjaro and can't remember what my NAS runs (it's been up literally for years, I don't have to mess with it). Then for "hobby" use I have a couple windoze machines that run stoopid consumer programs and things that only run on windoze. It's a good mix - everything runs optimally, I never have to mess with windoze update/virus crapola and I get redundancy via multiple machines. Once you discover a world with minimal windoze headaches, you'll wonder why you ever put up with it to begin with.

Interesting approach. For those of us folks living/working in our RV's full time that would be a real luxury,

What I was suggesting was that the Gmail app which you can get through your Google account (regardless of whether or not you use Gmail) is very versatile and it can be used to read your emails even if your email address isn't "gmail.com" For example, I have an email on the domain "sjweiss.net" but I read my mail using the Gmail app along with the mail from my work and Gmail accounts.

As for the second suggestion, go to Windows/Settings/Apps/Default Apps At the top of the page there is a blank into which you can enter types of files. One common file type for pictures is "jpg". If you enter that in the blank, a window will display with those letters. Click on them and a box with the Photos app will appear. If you click on that box a pop-up will ask "how would you like to open jpg files?" It will display several options, one of which will be Paint. If you click on Paint, it will now become the default app for opening jpg files. You can do the same with other file types used for pictures such as "png"

I'd be happy to answer any additional questions you might have. Just PM me.

Trying to minimize spam by filtering/blocking e-mail addresses (or even or especially domains - I've seen increasing use of gmail.com so filtering by this domain will obviously result is losing a lot of legit personal mail) is futile. They're probably not real anyway, or if they, are someone (maybe even non-spammer) else's email. Best to let your web e-mail provider filter.

As for the web and built-in mail apps, I hate them as the developers assume you're always connected and they're useless w/o internet connection. I still run Vista/Win -era Windows Live Mail for this reason. Can download mail, read and reply at my leisure, and send when I next have a connection.

As for computers, if the hardware is still in decent shape, one can always UG especially if the computer has at least 4 GB RAM. Best is to replace the hard drive with an SSD (not expensive). This UG can make up somewhat for lack of RAM but 6-8GB is better. I have machines running Win 10 that were originally Vista (and even XP for a custom build) machines.

Regarding email : DO NOT USE ANY WEB BASED APPLICATION !

I have been using Thunderbird for about 20 years and THERE HAVE BEEN ONLY A FEw MINOR CHANGES TO THE INTERFACE ! (Good for us old farts). It takes a little bit to set up. I reminds me of the very old Microsoft Office Mail.

One interesting feature is that it will allow you to use MULTIPLE MAIL SYSTEM SIMULTANEOUSLY ! You can even move mail from on system to another and store some of your mail on your local machine.

Well I just had a lont conversation with my computer guy.. His family own business since 86 has never steered me wrong... As far as Win 11 he said if I need it other wise Win10 will be fine for a bit yet.. He knows I use apps that are not cloud based and written in soon to be dinosaur .....

Email.. I Have been torn on this.. Blue mail and then just comcast mail online,, I have Webmail access on some special purpose emails on ecommerce sites.. Nothing fits all..

If I could ditch windows, I would.. I have Ubuntu Linux on my web browers machines and when traveling.. no complaints.
