Question for YouTube TV subscribers.

This is for the YTTV subscribers who travel with your subscription.
We have been watching our home base local channels when on the road, but I have been thinking it would be nice to also get the local stations at the locations we go to, for weather and any local news that would be relevant to us.
I know I can switch to OTA and get them, but sometimes I have a way better internet connection than OTA.
I have heard about the possibility of temporarily switching the playback area to the current location. Furthermore, I believe this is different from switching the Home Area, which is more of a permanent change.
Has anyone done this with YTTV? Is it difficult to switch back once you get back to your home base?

We've had YouTube TV for ~ 2 years and I don't know any way to do what you are asking about.

When we travel we rarely find a need for local TV. Getting the local weather is trivial using any of a number of phone apps or websites. As for local events, we find it about as easy to bring up local newspapers or TV stations on our laptops. JMO.

Doc,
If you go to Settings>Area you will see a popup that says Home Area and Current Playback area. I am asking about Changing Current Playback Area. The documentation on this seems to indicate that what I am asking about can be done.

Yes, you can change playback area as you describe. I find it is easier to initiate from the YTTV app on your phone. It should ask if you are travelling and you can just follow the prompts. We just finished a 188 day trip and I did this periodically. IIRC, YTTV, wants you to be in your home area every 90 days - there are easy workarounds to make YTTV think you are "home".

Usually I am working to maintain my home location when I exceed 90 days away. As I said, I have no interest in having temporary locations. JMO

We are part timers. We typically take a couple of 3 to 6 week trips each year, then several close to home trips the rest of the year. So being at home base every 90 days is not an issue.
I am looking for input from anyone who has used the current playback location feature.

Our YouTube TV home base is Charlotte. When we are in Brunswick GA area we get the Jacksonville stations and the Charlotte ones. When we move to Pensacola we get the Alabama locals and Charlotte. It all happens magically without doing anything.

This has to be done on the phone app. I’m talking about the YouTube TV app. You can change your local area, if you want to. You don’t have to change your home area.

There appears to be various and maybe random experiences on here about home market verses local channels.

My experience in about a year and a half of full timing is that YouTube always maintained my home channel lineup no matter how long I was away. First time was about 9 months and the second so far is about 6 months. Was back in my home area for about a month between the two trips. Not even an email "warning".

Perhaps it is because I only log into it while on the road maybe two or three times a week and generally not for an entire evening. It is perhaps the only thing I do different. (And I'm certainly not sure about that) NO other ideas why this is.

I cannot verify one way or the other on having to log on from your home base periodically. The longest we have been away from home is about 6 weeks, so I do not know about that.
Also, I have never tried changing the Current Playback location yet, this is what I am asking about. There was one suggestion that I always make this change in the YTTV app on my phone or tablet rather than on the computer. I do appreciate this, are there any other tips or comments on this anyone else can share?

The YTTV web app will allow you to change the current playback location, but it seems to use the location where your ISP thinks you are. For instance, When I tried to change mine on the web app, it thought I was in Waco, TX and set the playback location to Waco, when in reality I am in west central Arkansas. I have to use my phone to set it back to Arkansas.

Yes I think you have got it now
You can turn on/off location services on your phone. (Effects the accuracy also) But I believe they will use the ISP location then.

Regarding using the app, it will only let you “Update” to your current area; which is obviously based on your phone’s location.

This info is taken right from the Home Location on the app:

Only on the web, can you force a different ZipCode and tell it you’re just traveling.

I did go to the web interface, but did not see where I could enter a zipcode. When I click on change my location, it took my location from where my ISP thought I was, which was Waco, TX. When in fact I was at my home in Arkansas.
I do not want to change my Home Area, I am wanting to change the Current Playback Location.
