Remote temperature monitoring

Lots of people have situations in which they need to monitor the temperature of a remote location, whether it's for a pet left at home or an RV in a storage lot. As long as there's an internet connection available this little device will let you do this with your phone from virtually anywhere on the planet! Setup is pretty easy although the instructions could use some rewording. Using the phone app use Bluetooth to get the device connected to a wifi network then use the app to read temperature and humidity using WiFi alone. The instructions aren't very clear that all that happens if you disconnect Bluetooth is that the data is updated every 10 minutes rather than being real time. You still get all the temp and humidity data, it simply comes in "chunks" every 10 minutes. The device is powered by 3 AA batteries which the manufacturer says will last six months. There is a battery strength indicator on the app so you get plenty of warning when the batteries do need to be changed. Read the listings carefully, there is a Bluetooth-only version of the device which costs a lot less but offers much less capability IMO.

Here's a link to the device:https://smile.amazon.com/Temperature...ustomerReviews

I was given the device I tested by the manufacturer but I have no financial involvement with them. I accrue no benefits from posting this review.

Looks interesting. However, for about $12 you could have gotten a Sonoff temperature and humidity WiFi monitor with the ability to control a heater, fan or , with a relay system, even the air conditioner.

Sonoff makes many different types of WiFi controlled switches.

I’m a little skeptical of the low price. I’ve never seen a quality product that would do what this claims to do, for less than $40

Not sure I would trust my pets lives to a cheap $12 gadget.

Didn't like my previous wifi based system because of reliability. Have used cellular based MARCEL for a year with zero issues.

Don't knock it until you try it. Mine has been keeping my wet bay warm in the winter and my dogs safe and cool in the summer for a few years. As already noted, if the WiFi goes out your blind to any information from it.

Sonoff products have been around for many years. They can handle many functions at a reasonable price. They even have a 12 volt version that you can use for lighting automation, both interior and exterior lights.

If you have internet and WiFi capability, here's an option. With this remote thermometer with three sensors, I can monitor behind the fridge water lines, the wet bay, and under the rear bath plumbing as well as interior temperature. The camera also functions as a security system that alarms with motion and only streams when I access it. The camera is a ReoLink C1Pro and can be accessed from anywhere with the desktop system or their phone app.

More money, of course, but with a Nest thermostat you could monitor AND control your home heating/cooling system with a phone, tablet or pc.

I had originally posted for the benefit of RVers. Maybe a Nest can be used in some RVs, but I suspect there are many it won't be compatible with.

Would love to figure out if we could get the Nest to work.

I think the Nest is designed to operate off of the 24V AC power that residential thermostats use.

You are probably right, think we need a 12 volt device. However, they send all kinds of things to outer space, whats the hold up?

It's not that difficult to convert 12 volts 24 volts. Such devices exist and are relatively cheap. https://www.amazon.com/Converter-Reg...onverter&psc=1

Has anyone considered using a Samsungs Smartthings System to monitor temperature? It also acts as a self-monitoring security system. All of the sensors can report temperature. I use one at home and it doesn't use much data.

My Uncle mounted remote cameras in his Mich house to monitor while in AZ for the winter. One of his cameras is looking at the thermostat so he can monitor the inside temp. Another camera monitors the house mounted mail box for deliveries and driveway to check on the snow removal being kept up. He has a neighbor to call if he has a concern.
