San Antonio cell coverage?
Hey all,
Looks like we may be heading over to the San Antonio area within the next few weeks. It also looks like a long term project for Thom in the works at one of the hospitals there installing a system for them.
So the questions are these:
1 - How is the Verizon cell coverage in and around San Antonio?
2 - Is there one park that has better or worse coverage that you know of?
3 - Is it mostly 3G or 4G LTE?
We would like to know because the company will pay for the extra $30 for the hot spot on the phone every month or help with any other connections like satellite. We still have an unlimited data plan with Verizon so just going with a hot spot, if that's all that's needed, is fine. But if we need extra equipment we would like to get it before we head out there and then find out we need it.
Thanks for helping try to answer these.

We stayed in the San Antonio KOA last summer and had excellent ATT and Verizon service. We have ATT phones and Verizon MiFi.

We love SA and we go there frequently but mainly stay in the military CG at Fort Sam. However, we travel all around the city and DW takes the 4th Generation iPad and always has 4g lte. My cell has always had 4g lte and we have never had a problem in that area, "IN" the city. If you get to some outlying CG's you may experience 3G but I doubt if you would ever be reduced to Edge. We use AT&T.
Happy trails.

We can't speak for all parks in SA, but we had no problem getting 4G Verizon service at Travelers World CG there. We also use a hotspot on one of our Droid phones for our internet access.

I have been n SAT several times in the past several months and am returning in 2 weeks. I have 2ea. AT&T cellphones, and a Verizon Jetpack Mifi, and the coverage is solid anywhere within the 30 mile radius of downtown I've been. Ironically the worst spot is in the hotel at Riverwalk with the 2 cell sites on the wrong side of my "normal" room at the hotel.

We also stayed at Travelers World CG and received a good 4G signal. This park is a great one if you are a walker or cyclist, as it has direct access to the path that leads downtown and to a couple of the missions in the other direction. If you prefer taking the bus, it picks up right across the street from the CG. Our only issue with this park was that the spaces are a bit closer together than we like, but it is fairly typical for a CG in town. We have some information about our time at San Antonio on our blog, if you are interested:

San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the US with traffic to prove it! I wouldn't worry so much about the telephone service as finding an RV park near the work site. Loop 410 at rush hour is not a place you want to be...

Thanks for the responses. Thom will make up his mind which contract/job to go with by the end of the week. Debating to stay in CA or head out to TX. Good and bad about both offers and it's about even when you do a pro and con list so it's a little hard for him to make the decision. Knowing the cell coverage is good over there is one more thing to think about.

Does MiFi refer to its internal Hotspot capability?

Not to quibble but that ranking is based on population of the city itself. SA is 25th with respect to the population of the SMSA (Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area).

SA is a pretty large city...larger than Dallas. It is not out in the boonies and has pretty good coverage from the major carriers. Of course that will be some spots with poor coverage in any area.

Thom still has not decided whether to stay in CA (and become residents) or go back with his old job and get moved to TX and do some traveling with them for work.
But in researching everything, I called up the DMV in CA to get the amount to register the RV and I just got informed that rules have just changed and now diesel RVs are required to be smogged. Even thou the DMV site just a little while ago said no to smogging diesels. She asked if it was smogged and I said "The DMV site says the diesels do not need to be smogged" and she said "The rules just changed a few days ago and now they do have to be. The reason they were not before was because of trucks and business ....." I stopped listening to the rest because we are not a trucking business, lol.
Just thought I would let you all know about the change in CA if you did not know it yet.
