Thank smiller

Indeed cell coverage is far from being ubiquitous in the US and much more so in Canada. And for anyone who has travelled the Alaska highway for example can attest to the fact that once one leaves populated areas "No Cell Signal" is the norm. If one encounters any emergency where communication can make the difference between life and death, any system that can cover this scenario should be considered IMHO. There are modestly priced personal emergency beacons that use Sarsat or other Satcom services and all have their application. As I noted I have a Satphone that has a dataport but having a WiFi hotspot to enable the use of a smartphone would suit my requirement better. Right now I use a laptop connected to the dataport to get email and for limited web surfing. (Do not use when I have cell or other WiFi services.)

Being cognizant of data charges is reminiscent of our dial up days where charges were based on time. Back in my ARPANET and other dialup experiences, one would download messages and logoff. Read offline and draft responses and log on again just to send and get off again.

I am seriously considering getting a stand alone WiFi Satcom device that enables me to use that device almost like a cell tower that moves with me versus my Satphone. (My son is after me to do this because he wants full time access to my Satphone.)

It looks like not many RVers use this type of service, but prices have come down since I first started using a Satphone about 15 years ago.

Yes, you can leave the Globalstar Sat-Fi wifi hotspot active all the time if you wish and simply connect to it when you need to.

I don't think satellite voice/data service gets much cheaper than the rates charged for Sat-Fi but for those who don't have the need for full communications services and just want the security of being able to call for help from anywhere there is another product called SPOT that will send a one-way message to summon either emergency or roadside assistance, or just provide a 'check-in' (all is OK) message to family. It can also provide optional continuous tracking information so others can track your progress. It is small and pocketable so it can be used away from the vehicle (i.e while hiking, etc.) as well.
