DNS or Distant Network Service is needed to receive the big 4 networks outside of your service area.
Local networks are spot beamed in about 200 mile circles, so you get to see your local commercials.
When you leave the beam, you get nothing, unless you call DirecTV and change your service address. That has been reported to be a big pain by many customers.
With DNS, you choose between LA or NYC network service. It is not spot beamed but sent everywhere and no matter where you are you get to enjoy that city's commercials. Time zones get a bit off.
Because I lived near NYC, DNS is just my network channels on higher numbers ( around 390 and up ).
I have been traveling for years, without changing my NJ service address, all over the eastern half of the US, including the FL. Keys, watching the news from NY City.
