Small printer recommendations

We will be taking longer trips when I soon retire and DW thinks we need to have a small printer in the coach. I'm thinking not but to keep the peace, I'm looking for recommendations on a small, basic and inexpensive printer. B&W is fine.

We have a Hewlett Packard Deskjet 3520 which is a combination printer/scanner/copier. It connects over wifi and has a fairly small footprint. It sits on the passenger side dash when we are parked, and slip into a closet shelf for travel.

Ton the go printer

I bought a just in case Canon Pixma for only $20 at Walgreens. Works great, ink is expensive, but won't probably use it anyway. It is a color printer.

X2 on the HP. We have found the scanner to be very handy, as well as the printer.

That one gets very good reviews on Best Buy. However, the specs say it is 17" tall by 17" wide by 15"deep. Is it really that tall? It does not appear to be from the image on their website.

I've got a huge Canon multi function printer here at home that is not 17" tall.

17 inches tall would be with the scanner lid open. It sits about 8 inches tall with the lid closed.

I've had good luck with the Brother MFC series. I have found that the ink goes a lot father for the money than with HP printers. Can get the refills at Walmart, so that is convenient when traveling.

The DCP-J152W would work nicely with wireless networking and a Jetpack type WiFi/Cellular Internet connection you would be able to put the printer where ever you want.

We got an Epson WorkForce 633 a few years ago. It's been around the country a couple of times in the RV and no problems. Ink's not that expensive for it if you look for a deal. The old HP that we had in the S&B I was able to find 20 things of ink for $20. The deals are out there you just have to look for them.

We use an HP Officejet 100. Connects to the laptop via Bluetooth and is powered by a rechargeable battery. We charge it up and then locate it wherever it is convenient. We use about 1 black cartridge per year and we just replaced the color cart after 2.5 years.

i have been using a brother mfc-7440n for past 5 years. it's a laser version with fax and flatbed/multi page scan. i set it up on my home network so i can print from any pc/laptop in my home. it costs a little more but worth it (about $200 apiece).

Assuming you are a windows PC based household...... Make sure your new printer is windows 8 compatible. If and when you buy a new PC, it will more than likely have windows 8 installed and if your new printer is not compatible, you will have to buy a new printer. Don't ask me how I know this.

We have been happy with the compact Cannon iP 100. It's about 3"H x 14"W x 8" D.

I have a Canon Laser Printer LBP6018 ($60 at Fry's on sale) that I bought for fulltiming use since it is only 12 lbs and fairly compact (compared to my HP all-in-one at 35 lbs and 2x size). It warms up fast (8 sec) and prints 19 ppm. I just bought a MS Surface Pro 2 that runs Win 8.1. I downloaded the latest driver from Canon.com and all is well printing from the Surface.

Happy trails,
Bill

Bill, I recently got the Surface but not the pro series. I would hope to be able to use it with whichever printer we get.
