Smart TV or Not? blue ray or Roku 2 ?

Sorry in advance.. I'm an old gramma not a tekie
I'm looking for both home and RV. I have DISH HD lifetime,
and think I might get the DISH tailgater set up for the RV.
I currently have a 19" origional in living room & 12" in Bedroom.
I have someone who installs & hooks up RV TV stuff & can modify
my cabinet (saw what they did in another RV.. great).
I've seen some of these HD TV's & think WOW, I could go for that.
I want a TV HD I think LED 1080 120.. don't know pro con LED LCD.
That's what I've been told to get.
For home it was suggested, Samsung 50"LED 1080 / 120 it's on sale
for $799 Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy (I sit about 10'
from my TV & they said 55 is too big), and a 32" & 20-22"for the RV and get the following for
home & RV. a samsung or sony blue ray or I might consider a
Roku 2 XS don't know what that is.(get whichever I like..
I have no idea which one I'd like) instead of a smart TV, 2 HDMI Mediabridge
cables from Amazon $9.99 each and a Mediabridge Intelli surge
arrester (Amazon) $29.99.
I do have access to Netflix, I have a laptop and I do
rent movies on occasion. I don't do games just simple
old gramma TV & movies. And I listen to some music CD's
or have USB with music on it. I have a 32' Quazar that is
15 years old and is actually fine for me, a Toshiba VHS/DVD
recorder player and a small stereo (I shelp the DVD &
stereo back n forth to RV.
I don't want to break the bank here but maybe I should upgrade
a bit & get with the program.
Any help would be appreciated. I read reviews until I'm blue in
the face. I know we are talking Fords & Chevys. but help...

50 or 52" sounds good for your home. Definately go LED. The TV should last longer, be brighter, and there is no warm up. Also they are tons lighter, so you can probably carry a 50" tv in by yourself - the last one i bought was like 20 lbs. 120 hz is also good unless you go 3d - those are usually 240. Samsung, LG and Sharp are all good brands. You might want to see what they have at Costco, they usually have good deals.

Don't get conned into buying expensive cables. With digital, it either works or it don't. "better" cables don't result in a better picture, just bigger store profits.

A smart tv is probably a waste in your RV, since you need an internet connection with high bandwidth. The Rokus have good reviews to get you netflix, but alot of the blue-ray players also have a netflix app on them.
