I guess you do not have some speakers working but have checked the wire connections at each speaker.
Since I installed my unit, I know that I can just slide it out of the AV cabinet surround. Friction is all that holds it in place.
There is a positive and negative wire and wire ports that need to be matched at the speaker. The colored speaker plugs at the player are easy to match up.
Once you get to the plugs at the back of the player use a voltmeter to test the continuity of each speaker wire run.
I just download the manual and it describes the connections.
I would think it would be worth the $15 remote and some time to analyze the installation to see if the unit works ok for your needs.
If you are past that then:
The wires may not perform well with different speakers due to light gauge.
The player may be just sitting in its place and needs to be broken free of any glues and pulled out?
