hi, we have no sprint towers here and get our internet thru an alltel tower. even though we get evdo speeds, we still are considered as roaming. with this new 300mb cap, we will have to drop our contract with sprint. does anyone have internet with alltel and is it unlimited useage? we have an alltel tower about 7 miles from us. thanks, dave.

Are you sure that you are roaming when on an Altel tower? Spring and Altel have mutual sharing agreements and I did not think use of an Altel tower woud invoke the "off-network" limitation of 300 MB/month.

But to answer your question, Altel's wireless data service is pretty good, since it uses either Sprint or Verizon towers in areas where Altel does not have its own towers. Just make sure you have the National service plan for traveling.

You could also get Sprint network data service through Millenicom. They re-sell time on the Sprint network under their own brand name and make their own rules - no data limits so far. No contract either. I've been using it for 3 months now with excellent results.

If you're truly in a roaming area, you wouldn't be getting EVDO speeds.

When you double click on the Sprint Mobile Broadband icon to connect to the Internet, does the meter show a triangle? If not, then you're not in a roaming area.

hi, thanks for the info. i hav'nt talked to sprint about the alltel towers yet, but i do have the triangle in the sprint connection box. the box says evdo with 4 to 5 bars, so i take it that it means i'm on evdo connection. i know i usually connect at anywhere from 230-520 kbps. i have no problems with the speed or the 5gig limit, but cant deal with a 300 mb cap. thanks, dave.

That's really strange...I've never been in a roam area where I had EVDO speeds! Of course, the times I've been in a roam area is because we're out in the boonies someplace and I'm surprised to even GET a signal!

Hi AAADAVE,
I've had Alltell wireless for 3 years now. It works good for me from Gulfport MS (where we spend 3-4 months in the winter), up the East coast thru the Boston area. I can't use it in Booth Bay Harbour, ME, (in the summer-- where I am now) because Verizon (in this area) has no data capability (so I'm told). The gal that sold it to me had to eat her words that it was available any place that cell phone digital voice was available.

I've kept it because it is so neat at all my stops enroute up and down the Eastern coast, except at home in NC- I'm too far from a tower. Unfortunately, I use Road Runner in the home place. In Maine I'm using a "cantenna" to get WiFi service.

I haven't noticed the speeds too much because it does everything I need it to do, print, download pictures, etc-- you probably have special requirements.
