Well, they are about to test a smaller version of the antenna, which to me says mobile is not far off. It's not like they need to test for years. FCC had been moving pretty quickly with Starlink and not delaying for a long time to make decisions.

Thanks for keeping the thread going. It's interesting to follow developments. Starlink would not be much use to me since most of my camping is in Florida and usually in places with heavy tree cover. Generally speaking I'm getting decent streaming on my ATT unlimited plan. No need yet for me to get Starlink to keep up with the "Karens in the Wild" YouTube channel.

wondering if people want to post some pictures of their rv installs, i am going to mount mine on the roof, was thinking something semi portable and to just sandbag the base.

but would love to see what others have done.

When you consider how you mount your dish, you might want to consider its thermal limitations as discussed in this article: https://arstechnica.com/information-...e-for-7-hours/

Yup....I'm keeping track of our usage/outages here in Lake Havasu City, AZ.

It was 118 here today and projected to be 121* on Friday. We have our dish mounted on the roof which may be better, we'll have to see how it goes over the next couple of days

Hitch telescoping pole mount?

I've been looking around for a hitch telescoping pole mount. Something that will be stable up around 25' but haven't came across anything yet. Motorhome didn't have a ladder on rear or I'd use that to help stability. Anyone came across something good at this point?

It should probably be noted in this thread that according to sources online in the last week or so Starlink has filed request to the FCC to test then sell 2 new Starlink dishes, one for portable use, and one apparently as a replacement for the dish they are currently shipping. It appear these new dishes will be a bit smaller, it will also have lower transmit power, and therefore hopefully lower power consumption. There are other technical changes that overall suggest improved performance, even though they will be smaller and have less transmit power.

When I started this thread on installation and use as it relates to RVers, I was hoping there was going to be the ability to move around with your account. It isn't really possible today due to their geo-lock....some report about 15 mile radius around the subscribed address.

We do know that a mobile dish is coming and hope that along with that is an account type that allows for mobile use with the current antenna. That was my hope and thought. I have a design planned for mounting this off the back end of my Class A so I can easily climb the ladder and take it down. If the mobile anntena can be swapped with the current one (ie, you can plug one in and then switch and plug the other in), I will be considering get the mobile antenna and stowing the current with the tripod so I can park under a tree and still get reception. Hopefully best of both worlds. This will be a heafty investment before it is done, but still less and more flexible than a two-way dish on the roof.

Stay tuned later this year.

A friend has one. Interesting, he was able to get in on the Beta test. Confirms availability by address. I live 1 1/2 miles south of him and it came up as not available.

Got his, got it working at his house. Then loaded up, drove to a small town 16 miles south. Big open parking lot so no obstruction issues. No worky. 2 miles south at the Golf course, worky just fine. 12 more mile to campground. Set up on my roof, no obstructions, no worky. Take to my son's camper, 300 yards west, worky just fine.

Not there yet but if they ever get this thing 100% working it will be awsome.

gsgriffin: A couple of comments on your last post, first Starlink now has a web site that will let you move service locations from cell to cell, statements have also been made that they hope to have automated movement from cell to cell by the end of the year, as this current geo locking is not an arbitrary service restriction, but a part of the way the system works.

As to getting a second dish, I strongly suspect you would have to get a second account as all the brains are in the dish on the starlink system, the box that goes inside the house is just the included wifi router, which is not required for Starlink to work. (you can do away with that box and plug it directly into any wifi router, computer, etc. that you want to)

It seems to me that an antenna that must be out in the open to work properly and then overheats from being in the sun is a serious consideration for spending $500.00 for equipment and then $99.00 per month. I think I would wait a while to see how all this shakes out. We spend a lot of time in the south and west where the sun can get pretty intense. Chuck

Once again I don't live in Arizona and am stationary for months at a time with my rv so starlink is not limiting for those factors.

I am going to put it on the roof if my super c to help with obstructions and allow it q better view of the sky.

Has anyone just used their tripod on the roof?

A couple of things to keep in mind are that the kinks are being worked out fast, best speculation online suggest we will see the new improved smaller, lower wattage antenna be introduced probably around August or September based on speculation around the timing of the FCC filings, how they are worded, etc. as the FCC license for the current antenna design limits Starlink to deploying a maximum of 1 million of them to beta testers, and the wording on this license implies the current antennas are not licenses to be sold to general public subscribers. As to the need for clear open skies, this limitation will improve as the constellations fill in and more and more satellites will be visible at any given time, though this will always require some clear sky within 45 degrees of directly over head, it may get to the point of being viable at partly shaded locations, though that will take time on the order of 2-4 more years as we are just now approaching having the first orbital shell fully in place (enough satellites have been launched, but the last couple of hundred are still maneuvering into their final positions. Current best guess is they will all be on station by about August 9th, just leaving a few gaps in the pattern where individual satellites have failed to function. In theory all of those gaps will be filled in over the next 9-10 months.
