Portability can be turned off or paused when you are not using it, the same as you can do with the RV program. This gives me the prioritized signal for the time that I am at my homebase, and it gives me the RV signal when I’m on the road. Portability and RV give the same signal strength.
I suppose you will test and see how it works for where you head, but for $75 more a year, if you were on the true portability, you might see an improvement in speeds for the 9 months you are portable. The on/off RV mobility from the residential plan is the low priority signal while traveling (for 9 months). Residential is the highest priority and portability is in the middle.

If you find yourself on the road and speeds are getting to be a challenge, you may want to stick with the true "Portability" option and then not have to change when you get home or leave.

LIMITED-TIME OFFER
You are eligible to upgrade to the High Performance Starlink Kit for a $600 discount: $1,900 instead of $2,500. This offer is only available through December 31st, 2022.
This sounds like the permanent surface mount mobile antenna. Advantages will be for those on boats, high up in Canada, and those who must have internet on while driving or don't want to every have to bother with getting out and setting up an antenna.

Since it is not a motorized and tilting base and designed for permanent mounting in a location, you will still have a problem if parking under a tree and unable to run it out to a clearing nearby like we all currently can do. It sounds like the improved reception will help with some obstructions by getting to other satellites in the sky, and this will improve as they get more sats up. Of course, if you park under a covering, that's not good.

If you always park in the open and never have obstructions and park in a lot of snow and have a lot of power to melt the snow (twice the power consumption potential) and never want to bother with setting up an antenna and must have internet while driving, this could be the option you were looking for.

I think I'm good for now with the portability, telescopic fiberglass pole that goes to 50', ability to place easily on the roof or nearby and stores in my large front gen bay so I don't have to every plug/unplug...just stow and take out (cable goes through the firewall to the front dash where the router lives).

Has anyone else received an email to upgrade to the in motion for $1,900? I have not but would do it if I can. I wonder since I currently have my system inactive could be a reason. I guess I need to send them an email if I don’t get one.

I have an active residential account and, so far, have not received that email. I'm wondering if it is being sent to people who are in areas where there are coverage issues such as Alaska?

Thanks for the input, gsgriffin. It's tough sorting thru all the conflicting information on-line, and no doubt there will be changes over time, since this is all relatively new. I've "harassed" Starlink customer support with endless questions - (and by the way - they have been very accommodating and helpful) - and here's what Starlink has made crystal clear to me:

1) Residential service has priority over RV and Portability.

2) Portability and RV have the same level of priority. Signal strength for both of them is on the same level. When comparing Residential, Portability, and RV, there are only 2 levels of service: Residential (priority), and RV/Portability - deprioritized for Residential. Starlink support has been very clear and specific to me about that.

3) Portability is designed for those who use Starlink at home for their home-based Wi-Fi supplier, and then want to take the dish with them when they're RVing.

3) If you are only going to use Starlink when you're away from home RVing, you will want Starlink RV, ($135 a month), because you can pause service when you aren't RVing and don't need service.

4) But if you are using Starlink for your Wi-Fi both at home and when you're RVing, you want Residential (strongest signal with priority) ($110 a month), and then when you leave home in your RV, you turn on Portability ($25 a month), and turn it off again when you get back home.

For someone like me, who wants Starlink at our house, (where we spend 3 months a year), and also wants Starlink for the RV, (where we spend 9 months a year), the best setup is Residential service @ $110/mo.; and then we add Portability for an additional $25 a month when we're on the road. (I also have a Starlink Mesh that I use both at the house and in the RV. The use in the RV allows me to leave the router in a heavily insulated basement bay, rather than running the wire into the coach thru a window, etc.)

I'll also note, for those of you considering Starlink, they have made all this incredibly easy. The Starlink initial setup is literally plug & play. And then to either enable/pause your RV service, or enable/disable Portability, it's simply checking a box on the Starlink app.

I have had Starlink RV in use for about 6 weeks now. Not seeing speeds that some of you are reporting. My average download is about 22 Mbps and upload less than 2 Mbps. I'm on the RV plan and still in Las Vegas for a few weeks. It will work for what I need but I was hoping for better speeds.

That is actually new information if the person you chatted with was stating it correctly. When they launched the options, they were also clear to state that portability has priority over RV. If they are now the same, then that does change things. I will confirm that as well. Thanks for sharing what you were told.

Unfortunately the person at CS that answered your ticket did not read the TOS. It states plainly RV Will be deprioritized, Portability MAY be deprioritized.

Ed, perhaps you could even test if you want or need. When you head out for the 9 months away, if you do find the RV service being too slow for your needs, perhaps try to change to the portability and see if that improves things.

When I was using portability and traveling, I could reach "full speed"...150-200mb down. It could slow down at certain times of the day, but it appeared to be fighting to stay as fast as it could. From some RV users' reports, they are seeing that their download stays low all the time. It could be where they are at. If the lower RV speed is enough for you, no need to try. Just be happy it gives you all you need.

If others of you right now are using the RV option and traveling, might be good to hear if you see a trend in speeds, limits, location types that are better or worse, times of day, etc...

We have the RV option. Speeds will vary from place to place and time of day. Currently in the Tampa Bay area downloads average around 60 and upload around 8. In the morning it can peak around 150/10 and in the evenings dip down to 10/2.

Rare that we have any issue with streaming. Use it for full time work during the day and it is more consistent than ATT sim in a Pepwave, and this is with zoom calls.

In my travels, 6+ weeks last oct and November, in Texas and Louisiana and AZ
I never had any issues streaming, Zoom calls, anything, 24/7, as long as I didn't have obstructions on my Dishy
Speed was irrelevant

110% worked all the time

I have residential with portability with the router in the basement of the coach along with a mesh router inside the coach that I have wired directly to my Peplink dual router via ethernet. I also have Calyx (Tmobile) in a hotspot connected to my Peplink router via wifi.

I don't know if it's just being in Florida or I have something wrong with my setup but I still get considerable interruptions while on microsoft teams calls and buffering for live tv streaming. We are heading north this weekend for a few weeks so it will be interesting to see if the change in location improves anything.

Overall, I am very pleased with Starlink and it's a game changer for me. I used to have 4 hotspots and always played the game of which one will work where, the best.

Curious where you are in FL, we are in Ft Myers and have wild swings in bandwidth with Starlink. Only location from CA to FL so far that we have used it at that this is happening. ATT/Verizon are terrible here as well, I am told by locals that they were fine in the past and have not come back to normal performance since Ian.

Interesting thought about how Ian might have changed things up. We are in Polk City, just about half way between Tampa and Orlando. I can't remember when the issues started for me. We've been here for a couple of months.

Even with the issues I wouldn't give Starlink up. It's made my life so much easier since I still have to work.
