starlink speed survey

Whe i first go the starlink speed over 100mb were normal. This is when it was being used on our boat in the pacific northwest. Since we started a trip in the rv the speeds have been really diminished.I rarely see over 10mbs so not really much better then bad park service. Got me wondering what others are seeing. Has the service diminished or do i possibly have some bad equipment? Ben this way from seattle to new orleans. Clear view of sky.

I see 10mbps during hours of congestion, 30-100mbps off peak hours.
Connecting via 5ghz should give much faster speeds than connecting via 2.4ghz.

One option that may help is splitting the 2.4ghz and 5ghz wifi.

You can also run an advanced speed test to determine wifi speed vs internet speed.

The service is much better in the west than other areas. They have service maps showing if it's high or low speed service. There's been a TON of new users and they just got approval to launch their V2 satellites so I'm sure speeds will be a lot better soon.

I'm always getting 18-25Mb average and I'm in low speed area. Park wifi issues are because of oversubscription so just because the speed test shows higher speed it doesn't mean you're able to get that consistently

These comparisons are meaningless unless each person posts whether their service is residential, residential with portability or RV.

IMHO the issue is not the absolute speed that you measure, but whether or not the speed is adequate for your intended use. I don't care if I'm only getting ~20 Mbps at a particular moment as long as I can stream HDTV. OTOH those who need reliable ZOOM connections may have more stringent standards.

Also what speed test are you using.

If I use the Starlink app my speeds show considerably higher than any online speed test I have used.

As Docj said, even with that the speeds are fast enough for our needs. That is 2 of us remote working along with streaming music and or TV.

While high speed numbers are cool, unless you are doing major data transfers you are unlikely to notice a real world difference unless it is too slow to meet your needs.

Prior to SL when I was on cellular and we were checking speeds I told my wife that we needed a minimum of 5 down and 1 up for my job. Even at that I could still video conference while she streamed TV.

Have been using Starlink Gen 2 with Residential Roaming for about 4 months. I am in a RV park near Holden Beach, NC.
I have both the Starlink & the RV park WiFI connected to a Peplink device via WiFi as WAN.
This configuration has consistently had DL speeds in excess of 200 Mbps. UL speeds fluctuate considerably, but are rarely less than 10 Mbps. Latency fluctuates, but I rarely experience any buffering during on line meetings.
Looking at the utilization statistics, I can see that the Starlink is carrying about 65% - 70% of the load.

With all that said, I agree with the above comments regarding speed test results. Interesting exercise, but if it's working & meets your needs it's fast enough.

I always use the app for consistency and just tested and got 8.7. I agree with the statement that if it works then mission accomplished but i am finding some apps like amazon unable to stream. Netflix seems ok.
I am trying to decide if i should pause the service and go back to the hotspot. I just wanted to see if my results were as others to rule out equipment failure.

We are in KOA in. Davenport FLA with the RV version of Starlink and getting between 50 and 200. We also have AT&T Phones, Verizon Hotspot and T-Mobile Hotspot and all three are less than 2.0 on Speedtest and most of the time less than 1.0. We move for 5 days 16 miles away to different campgrounds for a 5 day rally and now our 5 year old grandfathered Verizon is connected 5G and getting over 200, T-Mobile getting close to 300 and AT&T is getting 150 on Speedtest. Starlink is getting 150 to 200 hundred. Location Location Location. You just need lots of tool in the tool box to get the job done sometimes.

I know Speedtest doesn't mean anything but it is the way I setup my connections in my Pepwave from fasts to slowest.

I'm on StarLink for RV.

Fastest Speed - 85Mbps down. (sustained)

Slowest - 2Mbps down

Average - around 25Mbps

(note, I've seen very short blips of just over 100Mbps, but it is very short lived)

Usually the 25Mbps average is more than enough to work and stream TV/Movies. . . . and the system seems very reliable as of late.

As long as it is fast enough for 4k and wifi calling plus a few other things that are on at the same time its fast enough. Never has lack of speed been a issue.

Comparing Starlink speeds reminds me of everyone comparing cellular speeds. There are so many variables that it's pretty much a meaningless exercise.

IASM - as others have noted, Starlink's reported speeds are pretty consistently faster in the west, where you appear to be homebased, than in the more populous Midwest and East. In addition, Starlink treats Residential with roaming service differently than RV-only service with regard to prioritization (or de-prioritization). Lastly, if you pause Starlink and rely solely on a cellular hotspot/jetpack, you will probably see much more variability in speed than with Starlink.

I can't speak for others but there are PLENTY of places we've been in an RV with no connection on any service or just barely a connection, and certainly not enough for routine streaming/work calls/data transfers. For us living in the west, Starlink is a lifesaver that allows us to be out in truly remote spots with a decent and occasionally blazing fast connection - satellites are always overhead, whereas cell towers are only in built-up areas.

Good luck in your planning and your travels!

Furthermore, for those using RV plans their data is always deprioritized. So all people are comparing is how badly their data rate might have been deprioritized on a particular day at a particular location.

IMHO this sort of discussion is a waste of time. All that ought to matter is "is the data rate sufficient for what you wanted to use it for?" And, since RV plan data is always deprioritized, if the answer to that question is "no" then there really isn't any recourse.

People continue to act as if Starlink "owes" them a connection with a specified minimum speed. If you've signed onto a deprioritized plan or at a "best efforts" location, then you did so knowingly and have no recourse if the service isn't as good as you hoped it would be.

I pay 135 dollars for a connection for a month so yes I paid for it and they 'owe" connection to the internet at an acceptable speed for my 135.00. If I don't get a connection that is up to my standards I'm not going to pay 135 dollars for another months worth so yes there is a "recourse" to poor service.
