Traveling with a Tablet - Advice needed

Hello All,

I am looking at buying an Android Galaxy 10.1 or a Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Tablet.
I want to use it to track weather and some navigation while traveling (the Wife would use it). I want to use it while traveling down the road. I have and ACER Tablet that said it had GPS, but it would not work when on the road.
Do I need to get a LTE 4G Tablet or just a WiFi unit for best results. I know these two units have GPS imbedded. I have a Verizon Jetpack and a Galaxy Note 2.

Thanks for any advice.
Les

If you have a smart phone with internet you could set it up as "Mobile Hotspot"

Hi Les,

The GPS is independent of weather. I have an Android Galaxy Tab2 that I use in my aircraft and the GPS works fine. Satellite visibility may be an issue in a mostly metal motorhome. If that is the case, one of the add-on/Bluetooth external GPS antennae may be necessary (and locate it in a place where it can see the satellites).

Weather is a bit more complicated. If using the Internet as the source, you will need a connection. The easiest is probably a cellular connection (3G/4g) and the associated monthly data plan. Of course, other options exist such as a MiFi type unit that connects to the Internet (cellular/3G/4G) and then all your devices connect to it. In the aviation world, there are some ground and satellite based sources for weather but I suspect you are not asking about that approach.

Turn on your Verizon Jetpack.
Tablet connects to jetpack for internet service.
Good to go.

Do not need the 4G in the tablet.

We use a Verizion JetPack with two Samsung tablets and a wireless printer. The JetPack acts as our router for the printer, this setup works well for traveling. We look up fuel stops with lots of fuel islands and parking along with prices. We use a Garmin for navigation and back that up with a Commercial Road Atlas along with Google Earth Satellite with street view to be sure.

Howdy!

Like you we have Verizon MiFi and also Note2. When I purchased my Sumsung Note 10.1 tablet I got WiFi only. I use Co-Pilot gps app and it works great, and you don't need a data connection to use it the maps are downloaded to the device. Personally I would not get one with data connection and be stuck in a contract seeing you already have a way to connect, and pay for somethnig you already have.

One other option you might want to consider is a Windows based tablet, I have this one Amazon.com: HP Omni O10-5600US 10.1-Inch 32 GB Tablet (Graphite): Computers & Accessories which you could then run the Silverleaf VMSpc system VMSpc | SilverLeaf Electronics, Inc. with a Windows screen layout. And, yes, it will run on Windows 8.0/8.1 with a little tweaking as described in the following post #93 by JDL http://www.irv2.com/forums/f115/inst...-191115-7.html

We have a Samsung Galaxy Pro 10.1.

If you want to use navigation you will need a broad band connection

Or

Purchase license for Co-Pilot or Sygic for a WiFi only unit like we have.

We have used Sygic for two years on 2 Samsung phones and the Pro and an old Vizio Tablet.

We really like the Tab 10.1 Pro.

i'm using a galaxy note 2 and dw is using a galaxy tab 3 10.1".
i'm using a hotspot free with foxfi on verizon. dw always has 4g connection as only as with me. gps is available on both note 2 and tab 3.
one thing to mention, if you are to buy a tab 3 10.1", better buy a tab 3 10.1" 2014 edition. it has 2gb internal memory, while the older tab 3 has only 1gb memory which has a hard time to swap files (jamming).

GPS

We use a Duel GPS unit with our iPad Air Wifi only for navigation and a Millenicom hot spot for weather.

For navigation with out cell data plan, look at the co-pilot android app there is a free version to try it out.

I have used the Samsung 10 for over a year, I consider it a "Gadget", it has too many shortcoming to be used as a replacement for a Laptop. My two biggest gripes are the need to have a Samsung printer to print and the "Touch" screen drives me crazy with it's inaccuracy.
