I agree with Rob.
My 3 machines upgraded with no problem. It was free. Yes you will have to upgrade drivers for your attached devices but that is normal. Remember that Win10 is touch screen oriented so if you don't have one it may become clunky until you learn how to use the "Type here to search" field next to the windows button. If what you want to use is not on the desktop you can click on the windows button on the bottom left or type in the search box to find the app.
As for every windows upgrade from 3.1 Windows for Workgroups, the designers made it easier to use but forgot to tell the users how to use it.

Don't let the few posts scare you off. You may not like windows 10 but it won't fry your computer.
When it's installed on millions of computers there are bound to be occasional hiccups. The same things happened upgrading to XP, Vista, Win7 and Win8. Occasionally your computer dies during specific operations. Sometimes the user makes a mistake and tries to cancel, reboot or shutdown at the wrong time.
Nothing works 100% of the time. Not the best rated cars, RV's, technologies, tools, cell phones or computer OS's.
If 800 million Windows 10 systems work 99.99% of the time that still leaves 80,000 failures. They are going to come up in google searches.
As said earlier, you don't usually see the good stuff in google searches, just the problems.

Yes the %may be low, but in my case it did indeed fry my lap top.

What do you mean "fry your laptop"? What component broke?
A OS upgrade will not fry hardware.

Exactly. The upgrade didn't cause the board failure. I've been working with PC's for 20 years and done hundreds of OS upgrades. Never seen the OS fry a board. In this case the board may have failed during an upgrade operation but it's highly unlikely that it was caused by the upgrade.

Upgrading to Windows 10
Ok we can argue this forever. I’ll state my position, hopefully clearly.
The software did not fry my laptop. The process of installing the upgrade did. The constant running at full processor speed and memory dumps for over 6-7 hours caused a failure .
My RV has a power surge protector and a voltage monitor.
The unauthorized upgrade was attempted on camp WiFi.
You can argue my pc hardware was at fault. I understand that argument.
The laptop worked great prior to install and it would not work after the attempt to install it.
I never authorized MS to install the upgrade. I deselected my approval to instal quite a few times.
The result was my laptop wouldn’t start up. Now I’m not a doctor and I don’t play one on t.v. But I do know dead is dead. This was confirmed by 2 pc techs that I took it to for assessment.
HP has a sequence of colored flashing light on the power light that indicates the problem. This happened to me 3 years ago. I don’t remember the exact code. I believe it was the motherboard . I’m not about to go an dig it out and fire it up just to prove a point.
There are numerous other peeps ,re my link ,with similar results.
I’m sure MS improved there processes with feedback.
My replacement HP laptop runs Win 10 and I personally don’t like it as much.

A Win10 update killed the hard drive on the very computer I'm writing on now. Windows tried the self-repair (took 2 days before it gave up). Ultimately it came down to what was likely a bad hard drive sector that contained data needed in one of the multiple reboots the OS does during the update. I ended up replacing the hard drive with an SSD, bought a Win10 Pro license from SCDKey.com and was back up in a couple of hours. I put the old HD in a USB drive caddy to recover my document files, Firefox .ini file and a few other things that were faster to reclaim in this manner.
The "update" software itself is not the killer, it's the stress placed on decade-old components like hard drives that I should have replaced earlier in ownership.

MS does NOT upgrade a computer without an administrator of the PC authorizing and invoking the upgrade. The OS DOES Update the PC however.
You situation is highly non typical. Nothing the OP should be concerned about.

One down, two to go! I converted my laptop to Windows 10 Professional yesterday! Everything went very smooth and I'm not trying to get used to it.
I was surprised to see that the desktop looked the same as the Windows 7!
I'm sure I will be pestering you guys with more questions as I poke around this thing! I really appreciate all your help!

First dumb question. I can't find my bookmarks!
If I click on Google Chrome on the desktop and click on the three dots in the upper right the Bookmarks option is there. If I'm on any website and click on the three dots the Bookmarks option is not there!

You need to export your book marks. Export them to a folder or to the desktop and then after the upgrade you
"import" them. You can export to the desktop and then copy that file to a thumbdrive and import from that on the other PCs.

That was a big complaint from upgraders, so they changed the default to be Win 7ish.

My bookmarks are there but the only time it shows access to them is when I click on the Chrome browser icon.
