Verizon Prepaid MIFI unlimited plan?

I'm lucky enough to have one of these. And it's all true. They offered this in 2018 and 2019, and I've religiously autopaid mine ever since.

My hardware is wearing out.
My 6620L hotspot is way way old, 2012 maybe? While it's supposed to stop charging when full, it doesn't and so it eats batteries. I normally direct cable it to me WifiRanger router, so it's always plugged in. It restarts itself often.

My Wifiranger is a basic "core" router from 2018. They recently released a new 7.1 firmware that has made it almost a brick. It won't direct connect anymore, it won't stay connected, it reboots and fails to reconnect often.

Does anyone have any experience with upgrading the hardware without losing this data plan?

Talk to Verizon. Your plan should still get grandfathered to new device. Moser if someone close has new MiFi you could borrow to test

Was faced with similar issues last summer. Went from trusty/true/old MiFi4620L to MiFi8800L that I purchased on eBay. Simply moved the SIM card from old to new. The 8800 performs about the same, but itís antenna is much better at grabbing a signal.

To be fair, we donít stream/work/game while in our RV, so if you do any of that you might have to figure out another way. Weíre still unlimited!

I have the same plan and over the last couple of years moved it to a MOFI 4500 and now have it in a Peplink Transit Duo router. Both times it just worked. You may get a message from Verizon wanting you to call them to update the plan/device. DO NOT contact them, the message is just a bot and won't affect anything. DO NOT go to a Verizon store for new equipment as that may very well end your plan. Matter of fact, the best course is not interacting with Verizon at all.

You were able to just slide the sim into 2 different non verizon devices and both worked?
cool and thanks!

Excellent, thanks.

Just to push the limit... What about 5g?
Though it seems verizon inseego 2100's are impossible to get right now.
I've seen them for T Mobile but I guess that's different?

BEWARE! I had the same thing happen. The 4G radio in my hotspot went bad. Went into a Verizon store and was assured my plan would continue after replacing my bad hotspot. All was well until my next billing period when I started to watch a movie and in 10 minutes it started buffering and wouldn't stop. Checked my new hotspot and it said I'd exceeded my monthly data limit. Whatt??? in 10 minutes?? Tried to log onto my account and it said the account wasn't valid. Called customer service and was informed indeed I had exceeded my monthly data allowance of 500mb! That's right, they'd kicked me off my unlimited plan, and switched me to the lowest data allowance plan. They tried to tell me I signed up for the new plan. I asked why would I give up a unlimited plan for their lowest plan for the same price? After two months and countless calls I canceled the service. Yes, I spoke to supervisors and higher level service techs. Every time I made a call I had a note pad on my lap and wrote down times, dates and names. It didn't help. They had put in a service ticket to investigate my problem early on, but the ticket was sent into a black hole where time stops, because every time I'd call they say my ticket was listed as pending. I figured "Pending" was their code word for thrown in the trash.

I wish I had recorded the salesman telling me I could keep my plan. Probably wouldn't have made any difference.

If I had to do it all over again, I would buy a new hotspot and swap the sim myself. Still might not work. I agree DON'T go through Verizon!

Good luck.

Learn something new daily.
We had same type thing happen with ATT. Rep at store said he’d email receipt, never received. Went through with customer relations and was told to bad. Cancelled and won’t ever use ATT again. After they ripped us off off over $1200 when our total should have been about $100 or 150.
Lesson learned was always check before leaving store. They don’t care about customers any longer. Like too many other places.

I have the grandfather plan also and use to be great plan. I'm sitting in Tucson and my download speed is between 1 and 3 but my upload speed is between 30 and 70. I even check at 2 AM and still the same. I took the hotspot in the Jeep and traveled around Tucson and get the same results all over Tucson and not just around the big camp grounds. I guess Verizon is trying to kill those accounts. My T-mobile runs about 270 download and my AT&T phones are running around 125.

Yes, this accounts are "network managed" but you actual speed varies greatly by location and the precise moment you run the test.

I have exactly the same plan and Speedtest.net just gave me 33.5 Mbps download and 20.4 Mbps upload.

By comparison my Pixel 6 Pro on a postpaid Verizon plan clocked 38.2 Mbps down and 11.8 Mbps up.

I understand network managed but at 2AM and all over Tucson and Phoenix is give between 1 and 3 on speedtest. The entire trip to AZ it was doing the same thing with great upload speeds but 1 and 3 download on speedtest. If it going to be network manage at every site I have been it in the last 3 months then it's not worth having. In the past when I got network managed it would be during primetime and be normal in the early mornings or at 2AM.

A lot of times the speed is also dependent on the band you are connected to. If your router has the ability to manually select different bands you can usually find a faster one.

For the OP absolutely don't go through Verizon for your new hotspot device. I have never had a problem with any of their sims being plug and play as long as the device is compatible with their type of network and the bands they use. Receiving 5G service will probably not be possible without switching plans though.

I'm not disputing the fact that you measured those speeds. All I'm saying is that the network management isn't universally that bad.

Out of curiosity, what hotspot do you have the SIM in? I'm using an old 7730L.

Verizon Prepaid MIFI unlimited plan?

If the itís the unlimited prepaid plan and the speed is the same wherever and whatever time I would suspect something isnít right with the hotspot not the account . Iím not in Tucson but my speeds vary and are much faster than that with the same plan and plenty of data used monthly. Maybe borrow a friends hotspot to slip your sim in and try if you donít want to replace without proof.
I also moved mine to a 8800l from an old eclipse soon after I first got it with no problems. It did do better with the 8800.
