Verizon to Spectrum Mobile - If you made the switch, how did it go?

We are long time Verizon customers mainly because we live in a rural, mountainous area and Verizon owns the only tower for miles around. As it is, we still needed to buy a Verizon signal booster just to get solid service at our home.

We are Spectrum internet customers and would be able to switch to Spectrum Mobile. My understanding is that Spectrum uses the Verizon network. Is that true?

I'd love to lower our phone bill, but I'm concerned about the area and quality of coverage. And I don't want to go through the switch unless I pretty sure it's going to work out since we're currently grandfathered in on a plan I won't be able to switch back to.

If you've switched from Verizon to Spectrum Mobile, will you please share your experience and opinion?
  • Do you use the by-the-gig plan or the unlimited plan (or both)?
  • Are your service and area of coverage as good as they were with Verizon?
  • Have you had any trouble when traveling throughout the country?
  • Did the switch actually save you money?

Any information you're willing to provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, in advance, for your time and your help!

Mary

I talked to a person in my local Spectrum store when replacing my cable modem recently and he told me that Spectrum mobile uses Verizon towers.

I too want to switch, however I have been holding off wondering what the service would be like, so I will be watching this thread very closely.

KMac, thanks for the confirmation that Spectrum uses Verizon towers.

I plan to watch this thread over the weekend, then re-post it under General Discussion if it doesn't receive any replies here.

Stay tuned and have a great weekend!

Actually Verizon sold off all of their cell towers. They're now owned by a company which I believe is named "Crown Castle"

We switched early December saving us about $50 month combined on 2 lines. Read the plan carefully If you use personal hotspot for a Tablet. The contract says you are allowed 5gigs for tethering before they might throttle you back to 3g speed. M wife is over 25 gigs for the month due to some photo work she is doing on her Ipad while we are on the road. The only slowdown came this past Thursday night at the RV rally we are attending in North Florida when it rained and everyone was on the internet at the same time. She had slow downloads for a couple of hours. On my line, I pretty much just use it for watching Youtube, Facebook, a couple of RV forums, CNN and The NYTimes. Iím at 9gigs so far this month and no service slowdown for me what so ever.

My Mistake, it's actually American Tower not Crown Castle

Quote:
Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) agreed to lease the rights to 11,324 of its communications towers and sell 165 additional towers to American Tower for $5.056 billion in cash. The deal comes as no surprise as Verizon has said for months that it would be open to selling its tower assets.

Spectrum mobile

I switched over to Spectrum mobile a year ago and have saved about $50 per month. Was a Verizon customer for quite awhile.
Spectrum mobile did not offer to bring your phone at the time I had signed up, so had to purchase phone through them . Still a fantastic savings and glad I made the switch. Now I understand they allow you to bring your phone when signing up. Havenít had any connection issues with Spectrum at all. Just as dependable as Verizon.

Right in 2015, American Tower "leased to own" the towers.

As far as the towers go, as long as Spectrum is using the Verizon network, I'm thinking it doesn't matter who actually owns the towers - as long as Verizon continues to lease/use the one in our neck of the woods. Interestingly, I found an article from a couple of years ago about Verizon and AT&T building new cell towers together for use by both companies. Cost containment certainly makes for some strange bedfellows.

Found this article, nothing earth shattering but worth 5 minutes to read

Also, read the comments. Some aren't happy with the customer service.

Thanks for sharing - the comments were just as helpful as the article. As a Spectrum internet and cable customer, I'd have to say that my experience with customer service in the past has been mediocre. However, there is a Spectrum location about a half hour from home, so I can easily go in to speak to someone in person if necessary.

I appreciate the info - thank you!

Mary
