Visible and 5G

Just noticed over on the Visible website, that if you buy one of their new 5G phones, they are rolling out 5G at no additional cost. They are claiming D/L speeds of over 200M, also at no additional cost. The Disclaimer is "Coming Soon".

It will be very limited in the near future to "In areas where 5g is available". For now that is in densely populated areas like big cities. It will be quite sometime for 5g to become available in campground settings. A 4G 10mbps connection is more than enough for anything I do.

The carriers are all in a 5G marketing race so now have started deploying a "new" kind of 5G that is a slightly tweaked version of 4G. mmWave is the 5g that all of the carriers have been hyping for years -- that's what you're thinking about when you say it will be in densely populated areas. However, both Verizon/Visible and T-Mobile are now using a different technology and calling it 5g. This tech uses low frequency waves to get faster 4G speeds over longer distances. On my Tmobile phone this is now displayed as a 5G connection.

Good catch. Thanks for letting us all know. Will be great for some to see if this improves the speeds for the "weaker" areas where speeds suffer.

I can't seem to pin down my current Visible speed challenges as to whether it is the whole area or just Visible. During business hours, my speed drops to a crawl, but so doesn't my son-in-laws home service, which he gets via long-range wifi. Our caveat is that we are within viewing distance to the next hill where top-secret military development goes on through several entities...one of which could be sending out "jamming signals" as a part of their development or security.

I don't know about the long range WiFi or secret jamming but variable speed is the nature of Visible. I can get anywhere from less than 0.5 Mbps, i.e., pretty much unusable, to very fast 100 Mbps. Most of the time it's not too bad, 10 to 20 Mbps.

Having lived near one of those facilities in MD for years, I long ago there wasn't any truth to those rumors.

That having been said, I'm about to trade my Visible connection in for another postpaid line on my Verizon account. Now that I have an iPhone to tether I realized that it was smarter to tether it on the postpaid plan and not deal with Visible at all. The cost is about a wash.

Even with their party plan? It can apparently be as low as $25 a month if you just get three other people to sign up.

I was trying to get the SIL and daughter to switch over to Visible since they are on Verizon now and paying through the nose. And downsides to their doing that? They travel some, but it would mainly be just their smartphone use while at home.

Just google "Visible and Reddit". You'll quickly find a Reddit link that will help you find a Visible party. You don't have to know them. The parties usually stay full but new ones open up here all the time. Even if someone quits during a month the party quickly fills back up and it's still $25/month. I've not paid over $25 since summer of 2019.

If I can get a postpaid phone for ~$10-20 more than I'm paying for Visible I won't hesitate to take it. I have other low-cost connections to support the data my laptops use but having dependable cellular service to streaming video is important to me. Lately in the 6-8pm time slot our cellular service has been unreliable unless I'm using one of our postpaid phones.

Postpaid is the way to go....

I have Visible but would never use it for my main phone line.

Why? What's it matter if both are Verzon?

I've never had a prepaid account before, so I don't know what the issues are. Is it just the speed issues (streaming) docj mentioned?

I have both a grandfathered prepaid Verizon account, a prepaid AT&T account through OTR Mobile and a Visible account (which is considered prepaid)

All of them are great some of the time. However, none of them are great all of the time. The speeds vary, sometimes on a minute by minute basis, from excellent to awful.

By comparison, I can always stream video on my postpaid Verizon phones. That's the key difference.

I agree totally with the comment that I could never rely on Visible as my primary phone.

Okay, I'll bite, what is the problem with relying upon Visible/Verizon as a primary phone? I switched from AT&T to Visible as my primary phone as well as for streaming and see no significant difference. I've been all over the country "relying upon" Visible/Verizon as my primary phone and have had a perfectly acceptable experience. Coverage area seems to be equal as well. Sure, my data rates vary by location, but I've almost always had enough signal to stream 1 or 2 1080P TV's and surf the web. I use Speedtest.net and data rates vary, of course, but 3-100 mbps is the range that I've seen and 3 is certainly not great but useable.
