Any one using or know much about VOIP(voice over internet protocol)?
We plan to do a few months of traveling in our trailer this winter and wondered about taking on Voip at home with the idea of accessing telephone and mail while away. Anyone doing this, and any comments; success or troubles?
Be glad to hear from you

One variation is SKYPE www.skype.com --

free computer to computer; Depending upon destination around $0.03 per minute to a land line.

Of course, you need reasonable speed internet access.

I have VONAGE. I have to say I am real happy with it. It was real easy to set up, and the prices are right. The box is small enough to take with you on the road, or you can pay I beleive an addional $10 a month and get their Soft-phone which is a software allowing your computer to be a phone.
VONAGE

two issues have kept me away from VoIP at home (or on the road).

1. E-911 doesn't work right with VoIP. Yet. Most providers are working on this issue.

2. If I loose power, my IP modem doesn't work. No modem, no VoIP. At least my land line still works. My cell phone doesn't work at home and from what I can ascertain, Verizon doesn't care. So the land line is a must.

Have it a work and use it all the time. As long as the it is setup right, can't tell the difference

Well, you were right, there WAS a problem with 911, but no more. They now allow 911 calling. But if the cable goes out, or power, you do loose the phone. If you cannot use a cell phone, I guess this would not be good for you. other than that, I think it is great.
