Help me understand...

At places like some campgrounds and the Texas and Iowa rest stops, where WiFi is available or free, do I connect using the Linksys card I use in my laptop for my home network, or is there some special card and/or software I need? I currently connect via my cellphone, but that can be very slow.

The Linksys card in your laptop will work fine, whether the site is free or fee. No special hardware or software needed. IF there is a fee, you will see a screen on your computer welcoming you to the wi-fi service and requiring you to provide payment information, e.g. a credit card, before you are allowed to proceed.
