wifi range extender

Hi Eveyone

i must declare; not able to speak "tech" with limited understanding....
(there; disclaimer has been stated)

we have been looking for something that could 'boost' the wifi signal when we are a park that has weak or very limited/non-functional wifi signal
have read lots here (and other places)
wanted something 'simple'

yesterday, purchased a wifi range extender; NetGear WN2000RPT
well in has 'boosted' the signal at the rv park we are at right now

interested in learning if others have used this product; the good, the bad, the ugly...

thanks!
regards, pdq

You really should have asked before you spent the $ to buy it but it sounds like you have a winner. I use a extended antenna on my computer and can get signals from as far away as 1/2 mile or so. I couldn't tell you what it is but since you have already got a good one, stick with it and have fun.

I have been using an outside omni-directional antenna thru a USB adapter. Pick up alot of networks and generally raises the level by at least 1 or 2 bars.

Everyone has their own way of doing things and your solution works, so nothing else needed.

There are lots of ways of improving wifi signal capture. I design and install wifi in parks so run into the issue a lot. If you want to read some about it, take a look at my website inthe Communications section. (And no, this is not a commercial site)

Hi and thanks for the replies

yes - inteterested n other's experince - for there may be 'short comings' to my solution

and double yes to limited understanding' (like what is "omni-directional" - i do know that omni means "all" or "everywhere" - but so what if it is "omni")

Some antenna, like yagi antennae, have to be pointed in the direction of the signal source; others will pick up signals from all (omni) directions.

I'm currently at the San Antonio KOA and their wifi system shows a strong signal but is terribly slow. I installed the AWUSO36H Long Range Adapter by ALPHA Network. No more problems. I have it sitting next to the laptop and don't have to aim it for it to work. Best $33 I've spent.

Try the Bear Extender. I have and it works! It is an antenna that plugs in via a USB port. It about doubles my signal strength. They have a version for PCs and for Macs.

WFRBoost for WiFi Ranger

WiFi Ranger has released WFRBoost, and external antenna and radio for the WAN side of the WiFi Ranger router to increase the WiFi sensitivity and speed.

Just an FYI for other with metal skinned coaches, wifi signals are compromised due to the metal skins. Initially, my built in IBM ThinkPad T30 antenna was weak to start with, and then the coach further hampered it. I went to Fry's in Wilsonville, Or., and was lucky to get a very good geek salesperson who knew the problem and how to overcome it. First thing was getting a Hawking USB Wifi antenna, the one that you can unscrew the little 3 inch antenna. Normally I don't, the Hawking works just fine, but to really reach out and grab signals, he set me up with a 8 db Trendata extenal antenna and 20 feet of coxial cable. It's about a foot long with the u-bolt mounts I clamped the antenna onto a 4 foot section of 1 inch PVC which just happens to be the same size as my portable Sat Antenna Tripod. And if I really need to reach out I have a spare 4 foot PVC and a PVC coupler, that altogether extends above the coach's roof line. The cable screws into the Hawking WIFI antenna. I have reached out to about 2 and a half miles and gotten good strong signals.
