With the pace of technology evolution over the past couple of decades, comparisons between what we used to do or want and what is available today are pointless IMO. That's like comparing today's smartphones to the "revolutionary" Motorola Startac I had ~20 years ago. There isn't any comparison.

I'm just doing as the original poster did. He was comparing campground wifi to Motel 6's wifi.

Just block most of the popular streaming sites and this will solve a big chunk accessibility issues.

That is exactly what I do. I block ALL streaming sites. It makes the system "viable". Although not what I consider fast. We generally have 1.5-3 mbps at each site - outdoors. Best I can do for the moment with a total of 20 mbps backhaul.
Fiber will be here shortly...I was putting in conduit for it today until the monsoons started. Once fiber is in I will likely free up everything.

Okay, they are just excuses. Or maybe they think what they have is great cuz it works for them?
Those of us that bring our own will never complain. People can pound their fists until they turn pink, but park wifi will usually suck for years to come.
1. Bring your own
2. Check your provider web for data coverage by location or zip code.

One pretty run down RV park I lived in 6 months in 2008 and again for a month in 2013, the WIFI worked great in 2008 but not in 2013. The owner of the place who also helps run it wasn't even aware the WIFI was running so poorly until I complained. It's a tiny RV park along side of senior apts converted from a large old motel, so the RV park is small potatos in regards to his over maintenance requirements.
Within a week of my complaint, he went out and bought a brand new long range router. Being the nice guy I am, I ended up helping him out and and installing a new router for him and configuring it so it would have the same SSID and security password as the old one. I had actually moved out of the park due to the poor WIFI (to a more expensive one with even worse wifi, but they had a pool.... which I barely used) but I went back anyway when he called me and did the install for him. I may end up going back to the park this winter when I get down that way to visit family nearby so I'll get to benefit from it then.

The campground I run is in an area where there is no cell service. We do not offer wifi. Most of us have satellite for tv and internet. I have talked to Verizon over and over throughout the years and they just don't have any plans to put up towers in the area. If they ever did we would all go to cell service for phone and internet.

Not to belabor the issue, but not offering wifi is not the issue for me, at least. Advertising free wifi and then providing limited connectivity or snail's pace connection, that is what really torques me. To me it's akin to advertising full hook ups and then providing a 4 gph water supply and a honey bucket for sewage. That just doesn't do it for me. A CG should provide what is advertised, not something half-baked.

How much bandwidth is enough
Tonight we're in a park that had adequate bandwidth until after 7PM. I FIred up my little network sniffer app and found that out of the 47 devices connected to the network 18 were streaming Netflix or Amazon Video. I didn't bother looking for Hulu or YouTube. There is not 4G here. No service at all. I'm hoping this will post when I'm done.
I couldn't send an email. Obviously the CG owners don't have the expertise to block high bandwidth content. And out of the box routers usually give audio/video streams highest priority. It takes not much technical knowledge to disable this, and even less to block specific sites or domains.
That's why we carry 2 different 4G devices. Verizon and T-Mobile.

Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion....
This is the reason why many parks take out perfectly usable wifi (assuming no streaming). It is not worth the effort to deal with unhappy customers.
I restrict the streaming (limit connectivity) so that EVERYONE can have reasonable surfing and email. I'm sure it torques some people off. The alternative to the 20 mbps that the phone company will supply us is....NOTHING. At least up till recently. So would you rather have 1.5-3mbps at every site, restricted to no streaming, or would you rather have nothing?
We advise people when checking in what the restrictions are. That gives people a choice.

That sounds perfectly reasonable to me! If you want to watch movies, there are DVDs, BluRays, and satellite TV for that. Oh, I forgot VCRs....

I am very happy with the WiFi at the campground I am staying at this summer.
Much faster then my satellite internet. YouTube with no buffering.
I will drop my $79.99 a month 1.2Mbps down satellite internet for 3 months if I come back here next summer. That will make my site that includes E/W/S only $270.01 a month.
