Winegard ConnecT 2.0 4G2+ 'loses' SIM

Hey IRV2 family, anyone else having issues with their Winegard ConnecT 2.0 4G2+?

I replaced the Winegard SIM (which uses the AT&T network but with more flexible and in some cases more expensive rate plans) with an AT&T SIM because we use AT&T for our family and it is only an additional $25/month for the third device on our unlimited plan.

The only problem is that the 4G/LTE doesn't work. It worked the first time we went out, but last weekend--our second trip with the SIM--I repeatedly received messages that there was no SIM installed.

Today I called Winegard and they walked me through the process of manually re-booting the unit. That failed to fix the problem. The solution they offered? Take out the SIM, clean it off, put it back, and then push on the "Reset" button for 30 seconds. The unit will then reboot and be able to see the SIM. This will require me to haul a 12' ladder around with me because I'm not climbing up on the roof. That is simply unacceptable.

I'm looking at moving the SIM--replacing it, actually, with a nano-SIM--and putting it into a NetGear Nighthawk M5. The benefit of the NetGear is that it has an Ethernet port on the back to which I can connect a switch for our astronomy club's New Moon Weekend and then connect an enterprise-class wireless access point near my imaging bug room...yeah, lots more flexible. I'm convincing myself.

I can still use the Winegard for bridging coach WiFi to park WiFi when there's worthwhile park WiFi and the OTA TV antenna.

Any suggestions for other solutions? I'm thinking of taking a piece of plastic--like from a folder--and cutting a small piece to shim the SIM. This RV reminds me of a boat I had once: a hole surrounded by water into which one threw money.

It turns out the Ethernet port is a backup port in case the cellular network is not reachable. Drat!

Which unit did you get? Sierra Wireless has some units which will work too.

Both the night hawk and the sierra are cell only the peplink will completely replace the wine guard as it will do the WiFi also.

Call the guys at the5gstore they can help you navigate the options.

I have the 4g lte unit with WiFi failover. I like it because when I am at home it connects to my home WiFi.

I am looking at upgrading to the 5G unit but it is a bit pricey.

Also it let me remove the wineguard from the roof.

There is a procedure in the owners manual to reboot/reset the unit without having to get on the roof.

To the OP.

I had that same problem when I used that unit. It seemed to happen in hot weather. I never found a solution. I went a different way and no longer have the unit.

The issue is that before rebooting, I need to remove, clean, and reinstall the SIM. I haven't found a way to do that short of setting up my ladder next to the unit, so I don't have to get on the roof, but I need to access the unit on the roof.

It's looking more and more like a PepLink BR1 Pro 5G is in my future.

Peplink Mobility 42G, 7-in-1 5G Ready Cellular and Wi-Fi Antenna System with GPS Receiver, IP68, SMA, 6.5ft/2m, Black | ANT-MB-42G-S-B-6

Hey Biljol, let us know how that Peplink works out. I suspect there are more than a few having trouble with the Winegard. My experience was pretty good using a Verizon SIM for about a year. When the park WiFi is good enough it also worked on that. When the ATT 100 gig plan for $55 came out I switched to ATT. Within a month I started getting the SIM not found message. Re-seating the SIM and rebooting didn't fix it, but a new SIM did. It lasted a few months so I called Winegard support. They tried some undocumented tests and resets that didn't fix it. Since I was under warranty and there was an improved modem card available they sent me one free. That didn't fix it either, but a third SIM did. That SIM has worked for about 8 months which has been long enough for me to decide that ATT doesn't have good enough coverage where I travel. I'm amazed how often I can't pick up ATT even around metro areas. I'm going back to Verizon when the current prepaid ATT month is done.

I have been using the pepwave for about a year I like it much better.

My biggest issue is I have to reboot the unit every once in a while but easily done via the web interface or just a power plug.

This happened to me for the first time today. Sadly, on day 1 of a 15 day road trip. Will try the clean/re-seed/reboot tomorrow, but terrified this is a bad sign of things to come.

I have also had this problem. It's the disadvantage of having the sim card reader outside. I put a bead of removable caulk around the simcard holder area.

You can reboot the Winegard without going up top. The procedure is in the manual. You start by turning it on. Then you repeat this procedure 3 times: Turn it off for 90 seconds and then turn it on for one, then off for 90 and back on for one... After the third 90 second off interval you turn it back on and leave it on to reboot. The system will reset to factory defaults. It will reset the sim too. It will forget all settings and you will have to reenter passwords and reenter its name if you changed it.

After a few months off, before we leave for a trip, I spend an hour with the Winegard. I check to make sure that its got the latest updated software and reboot it with the updated data plan. I do this with the Winegard connected to our home's wifi.

Winegard has an improved SIM card cover door with a gasket built in. The friendly Winegard representative at an RV rally got me one (free.) I haven't tried it yet as the last Verizon SIM is working fine. The Verizon SIMs do seem more hardy than ATT's in my experience.
