When DirecTV switches from sat D-4 (in orbit since 2001) to sat D-8 (in orbit since 2011). D-8 will transmit both SD and HD signals on the current frequencies and polarizations as D-4. What is changing in the encoding. In order to increase signal density, all the transmissions will use Motion Pictures Experts Group format 4 (MPEG-4). Your current sat antenna (dish) can receive any signals in the lower K-band (Ku). What you MAY have to do is change the receiver. Older receivers made before 2009 MAY not be able to decode the MPEG-4 signals. Generally any receiver with a number greater than 15 will be unaffected by the change.
